black license is a 'full' unrestricted car license. You get your Learners, then you get P Plate which is like provision/probationary, then comes the 'black' licence. it's to do with the colour of forms in old days and it varies from state to state what they call it.

I think I've heard about US driving speeds, a lot of the states here are reducing maximums because of perceived accident rates/insurance stats etc, but it's often just a revenue raiser. I think the NT here (Northern Territory) has some completely unlimited roads, ie do whatever speed you feel is safe for your vehicle.

added later: no I'm wrong about that they only introduced speed limits in the last couple of years, it's either 130k or 110 top speed depending on the type of road.

Licensing to drive is the biggest crock of manure. A license shouldn't be required to drive.

People with suspended licenses or no license drive all the time. License is little more than government control. DMVs should be abolished.

I don't know about other states in the US, but the Victorian restriction on passengers for class P licenses is kind of like our GDL system here in Tennessee. In Tennessee you can start the process at 15 of learning how to drive, and eventually get up to a class D (normal) license at 18. Here is the breakdown:

Learner's Permit
Minimum Age: 15
Requirements: Pass written/computer knowledge test; pass a vision test (you can use corrective lenses during this but if you do they put a restriction on your liscense requiring corrective lenses while driving)
Restrictions:
*Must have a licensed driver over 21 riding shotgun at all times
*No other passengers allowed
*Cannot drive from 2200 to 0500, during severe weather, or on unpaved road surfaces (The last two are a little iffy, I'm not sure about them)
*Cannot recieve 6 or more record points (you get points against you for accidents and tickets)

Restricted Intermediate
Minimum Age: 16
Requirements: Retain LP for minimum of 6 months while keeping a clean record; pass a practical driving exam from either the DMV or an accredited driving school.
Restrictions:
*No more than 1 passenger (you must have a 21+ licensed driver riding shotgun to carry more)
*Cannot drive from 2300 to 0400
*Cannot recieve more than 6 record points

Unrestricted Intermediate
Minimum Age: 17
Requirements: Retain RI for mimimum of 12 months while keeping a clean record
Restrictions:
*Cannot recieve more than 6 record points

Class D
Mimimum Age: 18
Requirements: None
(Standard adult license)

I've been driving for a month now. At 25, I didn't have to do anything special, legally, to get my license; but I did have to get a driving instructor to teach me how. It only took two months. I was surprised because when I was 16 I took driver's education twice and failed it twice. I think something changed developmentally between 16 and 25.

That is the case for a lot of aspies here in Victoria you can get a learner permit at 16, probationary licence at 18 (min) and a full licence at 22 (min). I will be 31.5 when I get a full licence but personally dont find the restrictions too bad. I do think that 3 yrs probation for a 28 yr old is too long though in some other Aussie states you only have it for a yr if you are over 25. I know at 16 I would not have been ready to get a learner permit and in fact I was not allowed to mum wouldnt let me. Even at 18 I was not ready to learn to drive I waited until I was able to and that was 27 for learners and 28 (last August) for licence. I look forward to getting a car.

Looked for a few cars today but nothing was suitable hopefully something will come up soon.

the required practice hours and other such BS were a contributing factor to me not bothering to license up until i was 20

within a year i got a commercial license as well, its fun

Yeah it is the same here a lot of people wait for similar reason I mean 120 hours for under 21s is a lot of hours and not everyone has parents to take them out.

Ah, the "fun" of getting a driver's license. Lemme tell ya...it took me FIVE times to pass the written test, and the time I actually got my license, I also managed to fail the driver's test TWICE. Well, I was happily driving back from the mall one day after I graduated high school, and accidentally gave some woman driver a fender bender( lotta details, but I confess...I messed up)...unfortunately, at the time I had no self esteem or self confidence, and when she called a policeman over, I said something that you NEVER EVER SAY TO A POLICE DRIVER IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT:

"I'm not fit to drive"

Yeah...they made me re-take the written and driver's tests AGAIN! Thankfully, they were both on the same day, and I passed both.

Well, upon moving to Ohio, I had to re-take the written test to get my new license. I failed the first time....but passed the second time.

Lol thars so funny us aspies always say way too much at all the wrong times. Dont worry I have done similar stuff too in fact it happens a fair bit.

It's why I learned just to stop talking so much. I'm really beginning now to pay attention to how I talk to people...not to improve it mind you, as I don't see that happening to that much of an extent. But more to notice all of where I flub it up, to notice just how bad it really is...and I'll even occasionally make fun of how I talk in public, to avoid making any bigger of an @$$ of myself than I already come off as

I am getting my first car on Tuesday a VW Vento 1996 and am so looking forward to it. Wow the freedom to drive whereever I want whenever I want.
