You don't think it is handy NOW? How about that earl that wanted something made for him, and said he wanted it to just be put between 2 slices of bread? TODAY, it is named after him, or at least the SANDWICH islands where he presided over.

I always use "the best thing since the Mac" or "the best thing since the iPhone 3G" or "the best thing since OS X" or "the best thing since Asperger's Syndrome" :P

Why? Coz those things are all better than sliced bread.

Na, technology is a curse. We will end up not appreciating the simple things in life. But i'm not complaining, mobile phones and lap tops are very handy :)

I hate it when people go on about "the simple things in life", it's bloody annoying. Also, Macs and iPhones are very simple to use, soo...

"Best thing since sliced bread"?

I found this saying always a bit stupid, because ready sliced bread is not a good idea at all. Bread keeps much better fresh if you buy it in a loaf and cut each slice if you need it. It is really no rocket science or take a lot of experience to cut a slice of bread with a bread knife from the loaf.

I considered always a big bread knife as one of the most essential items in a household.

i was txting this girl and she was telling me about how she's getting college credits while she's still in college and then she said "its the best thing since sliced bread". so I think it means that sliced bread was a major invention or a major turning event in history
Why sliced bread? why cant she say "since inventing the lightbulb" or something? wouldnt that be just as funny? was she trying to be sarcastic?
Any thoughts?

It's an expression. It's just an expression.

If your 85 and haven't got the strength to cut it, sliced bread is very handy.
