I do this in math class because the chair legs are bent so you can rock in it like a rocking chair. :D Usually it's because I'm really anxious.

I rock back & forth. I usually do it when I'm thinking about something, listening to music, watching tv, am anxious or in some other kind of negative mental state, tired, or basically when I'm just preoccupied. I'm never even aware of it, usually. Once in a while, I'll realize I'm rocking back & forth & wonder when I started doing it & how long I've been doing it for. I'm almost certain I've never done it in front of anyone, though... at least not as an adult.

Rocking is something I do not do. I pay extremely close to every little thing I do, especially whilst in public. I don't even dare do one little thing that'll make me look "weird" to anyone.

i don't know if I rock but when I did work placement at my old infants school I was sitting on this chair once and the teacher said to me to not sit on 2 legs and she said I was always doing that and rocking on my chair when I was a pupil there years ago.
The only time I "rock" is if it's a rocking chair, I don't rock on stiff chairs.

I catch myself rocking a lot while browsing these forums or when I'm looking something up online. I also rock myself to sleep. I also caught myself rocking once while playing a board game with my mom and my brother's girlfriend. I may rock at other times that I haven't noticed but I'm starting to try and pay attention to it.

See, I wouldn't mind so much if I was doing it involuntarily like many of you are describing. My younger brother will rock while he's playing video games on his bed, even if I'm there sitting next to him. I don't think he knows he's doing it, or he really doesn't care, (either way, I'd never point it out to him out of consideration for how embarassing it may be for him if he is unaware.) Mine is a completely conscious decision where I'll be doing nothing but rocking on my bed and listening to music, usually thinking, daydreaming, or calming myself.

Thanks for the replies though, guys. :)

In my own case, I don't rock to the music; I do tap my toes,
slap something with my hands, or even "head-bang" to follow
the rhythm of a piece of music.

I'm undiagnosed and I'm not sure if I have AS, but I also rock back and forth. I rock to music and I also do it when I'm excited or very focussed on something. I don't even realise I'm doing it half the time. I also pace up and down when deep in thought, but I suspect that's a NT trait as well as AS.

I rock back and forth to music.
I'v also recently noticed that I rock from side to side sometimes. Not even noticing I'm doing it...
I'm also still rocking at chairs that allows this... :P

Office chairs I tend to turn (spin?) around on.

It does seem very involuntary...seems like as long as I'm sitting in the right position (on the edge of the seat or cross-legged on the floor), I'll start rocking and not even notice.

I do that too @_@ My GF suspects it might be because I'm in such deep concentration...then she makes me stop because it makes her seasick =(
