''Why are you angry?'' is something I hear very often, even when I'm not. I usually look angry when I am concentrating on something.

My Mum said when I was little I used to look vague and people used to stare at me she was glad I didn't notice them staring.
I don't do that so much now but if I'm concentrating I might look serious.

I get that a lot and I hate it because I'm just not angry. I may be annoyed here and then, but certainly not angry, or sad, or in pain. I prefer that over a fake smile.

All I can say is that I had never thought of it before but my mother always said to me "don't look at people this way, you are scaring them". hahahahaha

Quote:
I've been told by an NT person who is close to me that I have an unsettling stare.
Furthermore, she has told me that she's noticed the exact same stare in other people on the autistic spectrum. She characterizes it as a fixed, empty gaze, that appears cold and unfeeling, almost not-human. She says that it makes her feel uncomfortable, creeped-out, etc.

I recently checked out the book Pretending To Be Normal by fellow aspie, Liane Holliday Willey, and it has her picture on the back. I showed the book to my NT friend, and she looked at the picture of the author and said, "Oh my god! It's that stare!! !"

Just today, I looked at myself in the mirror, and I swear I saw what she meant.
There is a quality in my eyes that is haunting, as if the "ME" is missing... it is somewhere lost in my brain, but not present and engaged through my eyes. If the eyes are the window to the soul, then I begin to wonder about the nature of my soul... (not really, just an expression)

Anyways, how do you feel about this?
Do you think that Aspies have a characteristic stare?
Has anyone ever commented on your gaze or the looks you give?

Thanks for your replies!

NTs have a variation of the so-called Aspie stare BUT it's utilized when they are engaged in TASKS involving OBJECTS.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Many people said I have "spooky" eyes. Or a "fixed gaze". Glad to know I'm not the only one.

Wow old thread. Anyway I have been told I have an intense stare. Something like an intense look of concentration or focus.

I've never understood how NTs can read things about people in eyes. To me, eyes are just blue or green or brown or whatever colour they are, and mean little other that that. There was a brief period when I actually tried to look at people's eyes, but they didn't tell me anything, so I gave up. But I suppose I do stare.

When I stare into someones eyes, I try to feel they're soul.

talking about stares, I also have 2 more, one is I look at people trying to connect with their souls, as Mithos commented above, I try to delve deeply and connect, and the men think I am hitting on them lol and also, I have found that sometimes I look in people's eyes, but I dont see them, its as if I am blind. I can talk for 5 minutes and look at their eyes but I bet its a blank stare, coz I don't see their eyes, I see inside my mind, looking at the phrases I am uttering, as if I am reading typing. Sometimes I even mispronounce, so instead of "sword" I saw "sooward" and in my mind it's coz I read a typo. lol

Newbie here. I've just read this whole thread after Googling 'autistic gaze' in the hope of finding I'm not alone in having an unnerving gaze....often apparently looking angry when I'm not actually feeling anything in particular....and having real difficulty in round-table meetings at work when I watch the person who's speaking. They somehow HAVE to lock eyes with me and can't get away. They're somehow fascinated and gripped by my gaze, which is hard for me because I can't hold someone's eyes for long without feeling acutely uncomfortable. I have to look away and casually stare at a pillar or something!

From my point of view I'm simply concentrating on what they're saying - I have the same look now whilst I'm concentrating on the computer screen, I can see it in the webcam. I think it comes from using my eyes to see what I'm looking at, but not actually engaging my eyes. My brain is doing the work, the eyes are just a vehicle for seeing and not a means of communication in themselves.

I had trouble in childhood, having had several bashings-up for 'staring' at other children I was merely looking at, but my difficulties with adults are comparatively recent. For years I never looked anyone in the eye at all, it felt like looking into the beam of a powerful torch in the dark. I trained myself to do it in order to fit in a bit better...and then came up against this. You can't win, can you! But I'm glad I read this, it's made me feel as if I at least fit in somewhere.

Yeah.. many people were accusing me that i look angry/arrogant at them, in fact i hate when someone is staring at me and i try to avoid as much as i can to stare at people - i think it is not polite.

I've been told that, but I don't know if its more because of the AS or the PTSD, or simply a combination of both.

Exactly. I have never understood why people feel eye contact is important. Though I've been this way for my entire life, and now I am being told that I've been going about this all wrong.

I have been told I have a blank stare as my normal facial expression. I also stare blankly at a fixed object when I am thinking deeply.

Also, my buddy is definitely an NT, and he does the occasional stare at a fixed object while he's thinking off in his own world.

I stare at fixed points while thinking. I zone out and am purely internalised when this happens - which is very often - and I am certainly impervious to human connection. I am self "absorbed" and i am thoroughly, beautifully and happily engaged with my own internal workings... and those around me detest and loathe it.

"there she goes...she's gone..." they say at home.
"gone. not home."

home to myself. not to them.

Yeah, that makes sense.

I do that every day. It's not something that bothers me. But it irritates other people.

I don't see anything wrong with it. And I hate when people tell me I am doing it again. ^^
