When they say "be confident" instead of giving any real advice or feed back

When they say "stop caring about what others think" even when it effects the way you get treated on a regular basis.

When they say "don't worry" or "don't say that" after you apologize, even if you weren't worried in the first place because it seems like they take it that you're looking for their approval when you are just trying to be polite.

Yeah, exactly. How do I be confident, exactly? It's not as if I don't already know I should be confident; I just don't know how to do it. O.o

"It is what it is"

I feel like it's just another way of saying "suck it up" when you're opening up to someone about your struggles.

"You look so much better when you smile, you should do it more often"

Sure, if you give me a reason to. Randomly smiling just for the heck of it really isn't my thing.

"Why can't you be more like so and so"

When I was a kid I would sometimes hear my mom say "I'm so thirsty I could ocean", and I wondered why she'd want to even if she could because it's just too salty.

I think this might be an American English thing: It annoys me when all clothes worn on your head is referred to as hats. Hats are are something very different from caps and tuques.

"Smash"

Hearing someone say that makes me want to smash them in the face.

All of this bizarre teenage slang and the butchering of the English language is everywhere these days. :skull:

So you've had it with those "young whippersnappers" with their newfangled words and how they're always texting? :P

I think that our way of how we used to communicate with each other back then is going to die, replaced by improper and vulgar language. I think it's time we bring back those vocabulary and so called "obsolete" words, and use them for everyday conversations, don't you think so?

I agree about broadening vocabulary. I have no problem with a little vulgarity or with changes in language though. Slang can be part of a generation's or group's identity.

^I frequently feel like an old lady who makes the 'whippersnappers' all confuzzled by talking in articulate lexicon-like speech and not acquiescing to the slang movement, but then runs around like a young child and cuddles kittens and believes in things that no one else does.

Well, when it comes to fads and trendy stuff, and just doing stuff or getting into things that most people do just to fit in.... I'm just not very fond of it. TBH, just because something is a new thing it doesn't always mean it's good.

I agree. Most trends are neither good nor bad, just neutral.
