My guess is that none of us here is "really" autistic or we wouldn't even know how to use a computer.

We are "on the spectrum" and have at least Aspergers.

We know that we are not NT'S.
We have been diagnosed as being what we are..

Well, autism as we know it has a broader definition now that it used to..when I was a kid, my mom explained that autistic meant a person who was not able to communicate or interact with the world around them in any functional capacity whatsoever...more or less....The concept of the "spectrum" was non existent...you just were or you weren't...(and by that definition I am not...and wasn't..as a child)..but that is no longer what having Autism means...exclusively...

I know of many with LFA who can use a computer like anyone else (sure, they may stare at pretty pictures for an abnormally long time, but they can use it); some can type well enough to converse (there's a couple of members here with LFA, you just wouldn't know unless they told you). The 1/4 with HFA can if they want to.

I'd say it's only those with Profound Autism who'd have problems with a computer, which is about 1/4 of those with Autistic Disorder.

I have it. It's in an envelope on the mantelpiece.

Seriously, though, what is the point of this thread? Is it to make yourself feel special, like "I REALLY have autism, these people just WISH they could be like me"?

This is a community for people who definitely are on the spectrum, think they are on the spectrum, know they aren't but have some traits, or know they aren't but want to learn about it. It doesn't matter what someone's diagnosis is on here. A lot of people here have felt isolated or excluded because of their experiences, and this is a place to be accepted. Why would we start isolating or excluding here?

Just curious. Your sig said you were a savant. What are your abilities? I find savants extremely intriguing!

Hi, thanks for asking. I am a talent savant in music. How it works for me is if I get fascinated by a musical instrument, I can play it in little time without lessons or training---for example the hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, and harmonica. After tinkering with the instruments for a short time I began playing songs. For the hammered dulcimer it took about three days, and for the mountain dulcimer it took around one day. For the harmonica I began playing it immediately. When I play music in public, it's like a glass shield encloses me and I am in my own world. When I finish, the shield comes down and there is the audience. If you ask me what note I am playing, I probably cannot tell you. I just seem to know where to go with the song. It's like the instrument becomes a part of me, and I do not need to know how it works in order for it to work (just like our anatomy---we move automatically without knowing how we work).

I also have a memorizing skill for the things I am fascinated with. For example, by the time I was in high school, I had memorized the statistics (height, length, ride time, designer, builder, year of build, and track layout) for every roller coaster in North America without trying to memorize them.

My health clinic has that term about me in the computer too under my name for patient information and the list of problems I have. But ironically, they also have AS listed too.

:| I was showing some definate signs in my childhood. I have no money for this paper work. Alot of NTs have literaly told me, all my life time, that I am quiet and different. Most people are just confused with me. "Ok, did she grasp what I told her or not? :duh:" Apparently saying "OK I understand." Doesn't do it enough for them. They expect some sort of expression? .. and I won't provide it will I? Ah oops.. :) I'm so very tired of having to repeat myself to my family though.

I sorta felt like the question had a bit of a trolly vibe...and it also hit a sensitive spot with me as I am easily inclined to go into a loop of self-doubt on this issue because I don't have total closeure...and these loops I go in are an unnecessary waste of head space that I really could be using for other things...

This is also a forum for friends and family of people on the autistic spectrum...so of COURSE not everybody on the board is really autistic...but as seen in the poll, the vast majority are.

I am sorry to offend the OP if she was not trying to troll...

Not to be offensive in anyway but if I werent autistic, I would've never touched these forums.

I used these forums more for learning about my autism more than as a shared-interest forum.

Diagnosed w/slightly mild-yet significant-AS...and some other stuff...so yeah, I'm on the spectrum.

I have aspergers. I'm not autistic. Just half. I'm on the spectrum. Just not all of me. Just part of me. So that's cool. I'm just glad I'm not all normal. If I can even find one thing about me that is normal.
