New ASD subgroup
Ok RampionRampage... True, I missunderstood Fibromyalgia. I don't have chronic widespread pain. I sometimes feel that, occasionally quite strong, but cannot say it is chronic.
I would be interested to see a database of trait associations and frequencies. Has anybody seen something like that? Can we create one?
In one of the links provided by Tollorin, I found some crappy studies about giftedness, but also two very good ones. In particular, one studying what makes "gifted" people fail at work. I discussed that with my boss, together with what I learned with the cognitive therapy with my psych, with an excellent outcome!! I think things will improve a lot this year!! ! ![]()

By what standard did you judge these studies, and why were some 'crappy'?
I'm guessing you like the one about gifted people who fail at work as this is an experience which you have dealt with (successfully, which is great).
You seem to be basing your opinions on what you'd like to believe about yourself.
or.
You are unable to accept that there is a chance that not everything conforms to your understanding of the concept of 'gifted'.
Not all gifted people are Aspies. Some may struggle at work, some may not. Same with Aspies.

Crappy are the ones based on questionnaries sent by mail, to people from a very biased sample. I don't think its because I wish they are wrong, they simply tell nothing usefull.
Absolutelly.... wrong. I never understood the concept of gifted. This is what I am trying to understand. Sorry If I am not very smart.
i hope no one minds. i thought i would create a few links:

this is Intense World Theory from the point of view of someone with AS---i really enjoyed reading it.
(in addition, there is a thread on this site devoted to Intense World Theory. this link appears there also.)
here's one for Dabrowski's overexcitability theory:
http://www.stephanietolan.com/dabrowskis.htm
just a little aside:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amygdala
i thought the paragraphs regarding long term memory were particularly interesting: how the amygdalae have an indirect effect on long-term memory by mediating emotions related to the memory. (according to this, we're more likely to remember something long term if it has a strong emotional impact.)
so---if the amygdalae are hyper-functioning--- as opposed to hypo-functioning---wouldn't this also explain the well-noted autie long term memory for things related to fields of interest? maybe the term "narrow interests" in regards to autism could be re-termed as "extreme passions" for one topic or another.
i think it could also explain social challenges. i think it's not so much a matter of indifference (in my case at least.) it seems more that social interaction, sustained eye contact, etc. are really somewhat overstimulating. i'm not withdrawn because of apathy, but because of feeling overwhelmed. i wonder--since anxiety disorders and ptsd are so common on the spectrum---if i'm not completely alone in this.
ps: i don't think the theory is saying that there's another sub-group on the spectrum. i think it's just presenting an alternative explanation for why certain traits appear so often in autistics in general.
