In Britain it's commonly pronounced as "As- PUR - jers", with the emphasis on the PUR sound and with a soft g. I'd suggest people who don't like the "ass burgers" comments abandon that pronunciation.

I am in the UK and I pronounced it "asperjers" in front of a phsyciatrist and he corrected me and said "aspergers".

I've heard Ass burgers, and Asp purgers. I use the latter pronunciation, as it sounds less silly and crude than the former.

I don't think they are funny. The last thing an Aspie needs is an ignorant, whitless butt hole that thinks it's perfectly acceptable to be mean.
"Asss.. hahaha, you stupid idiot! What the @#% is ASS.. BURGERS? You think smearing a burger on your butt is horrible. I get it. Hahah!"

People of such intellectual variety, that are likely to reply this way, we should be careful around.

More likely, Asperger means a person from Asperg (a city in Germany), like a person from Berlin is a Berliner.

Well, he shouldn't have done that. Pronounce it how you want.

I didn't believe that anyone can speak it like "assburger", but when I watched some videos on Youtube, I heard it. So it's really possible. Sympathy for English speakers for their pronunciation.

It shouldn't be spoken how somebody wants, but how is correctly. I wouldn't want anyone to speak my name wrong. So, not asperjers and not assburgers. Learn correct German pronunciation. Assburgers sounds really funny.

I disagree, in this case.

People in the English speaking world don't generally pronounce words borrowed from other languages exactly as they are spoken in those languages so I don't see why Aspergers should uniquely be accorded that honour. The issue here is the some people use a common pronunciation of this word to humiliate and demean children with Aspergers - children who already have an unusually difficult time among their peers. I think it's entirely appropriate - seeing as there are two forms of pronunciation of the word Aspergers commonly used in English speaking countries - for people to select the pronunciation which they feel is likely to reduce these incidents of teasing or bullying. Whether or not this pronunciation is exactly as the word is pronounced in it's original language is of infinitely less importance, IMO.

But, just out of interest, how is is pronounced in German? Not that it will change my habit. I'm just curious.

I think if people don't want to be bullied because of "assburgers", they should speak it "aspergers", it sounds better.

Thanks for the video. Interesting. It's actually rather hard for me to pin down the exact pronunciation as given there. Therefore, as an UK English speaker, I don't think I could pronounce it exactly as a German would even if I tried.

I'm going to stick with As -PUR - jers. That's how my doctor says it and how most of the other people I've met say it and it neatly sidesteps childish "ass-burgers" comments.

Hm. The only mispronunciation I've heard is "aschbergers".
