As. and driving
My most basic problem is depth perception. No matter how long I've driven a car I end up parking way off. Forget about parallel parking. (Thanks goodness that part was skipped in my driving test 6 years ago.) I usually put the car far out from the curb or 2/3rds of the way into a regular parking space, especially if there's a car ahead. I always try to find a spot where I can do a pull-thru so I don't have to back out.
The related and more serious problem is handling moderate to heavy traffic. I avoid major city traffic if at all possible. The closest I've driven to DC is Shirlington and that was just scary. The central issue is merging or changing lanes. I can't ATTEMPT to judge if a lane is open enough with stuff ahead of me, especially at highway speeds. It really helps if I have a codriver along though. I'd bet this will be the cause of my next accident.
One of my many driving peeves: Because of my reaction time, I generally leave a few car lengths open ahead of me at highway speeds. Of course this is frequently exploited by other drivers and I have to slow down to build up the space again.
I can drive, I love driving. I'm still learning but it seems I'll be alright. My awareness of other cars and my own car's spacew is not good, parallel parking is a NIGHTMARE, and I find it's like information overload, all these things happening at once which is REALLY distracting. There's the speedo, and that man over there, and his dog, and the fact that his dog isn't on a lead, and then there's the other car coming the other way but it's okay because it's on the other side of the road, and there's the road signs, and the birds in the sky which might be birds of prey, and the fact that the sky is a really vivid blue sometimes as well which is really pretty. I know I shouldn't watch it just because it's pretty but I can't help it! I nearly ran over a sparrowhawk the other day, just flitted out in front of me and I had to slam the brakes on. Also my driving instructor likes to talk to me so I have to think about that as well! A couple of times my eyes have been darting around and I haven't been able to concentrate lol.
What I like about driving is that there's set rules, and the car I'm learning in is simple (if you want to park in a space, wait until the line of the space reaches the corner of your back seat window and then left lock). My car, on the other hand, doesn't know the rules. This is difficult. And I don't even have AS! I think I'm just a bad driver lol.

Apart from having some trouble judging distances when parking I reckon I'm ok.
Can't say I look on driving as being a leisure pursuit however,it's more like doing a
task.
As for things like gripping the steering wheel too tightly,I suppose that's better than
trying to drive with one hand or letting go of it completely !
I'm 32 and haven't passed the (UK) driving test. I failed three times. I didn't have much of a problem at all actually operating the vehicle; it was reading the road I couldn't grasp. My instructor was always having to stamp on the brakes because I hadn't seen another car. Or I'd be driving along, and he'd say, "Do you realize you're driving the wrong way down a one-way street/doing 40MPH in a 30MPH zone?" and I'd say, "No..." because I just hadn't noticed the sign.
I drive around all day for my job. I love driving.
But I do get really nervous and upset sometimes. Mostly because I never drive more than 5 miles over the speed limit, which means that there's usually someone on my bumper. I especially hate it on really tight curvy ramps on and off highways. I drive a truck, not a sports car. I can't take sharp curves at 70 mph like the car behind me apparently wants me to. I would rather not flip the truck over and die.
And I hate merging. I always watch for cars coming down the ramp and slow down if I can't get over so they'll have room, or speed up so that they'll have room to get in behind me. Everyone else just keeps going and won't get over or slow down even if there's no one in the other lane for miles, so you have to come to a stop at the end of the onramp and wait for a chance to get in.
And I have to slow down sometimes to look for house numbers or street names, and I've missed many a turn and turned around farther down the road and had to come back because there was someone on my bumper and there was no way that I could slow down and turn in without getting rear-ended.
Basically...I love driving. I hate dealing with reckless selfish speeders. It's like most other people out on the road have a death wish. I just can't understand the mentality of going 60 in a 35 zone.

I am seriosusly struggling with driving; I've only had about 6 lessons so far, but I can tell I'm not a natural. I find it difficult to press the correct pedal at the right time, while looking at the road, turning the steering wheel, and using the indicators at the same time. I also find it difficult to judge distances, i.e. I often drive too close to the kerb, so I correct that, but I end up driving too far out. I also use the steering wheel incorrectly...apparently I'm not using enough of it, and I'm doing 'more work that what's necessary.' I find it hard to use the wheel 'properly' but hopefully it will come with time.

I don't have any difficulty maintaining control of the vehicle, but I often have to concentrate so hard to keep track of what all the other vehicles around me are doing that I sometimes forget where I'm supposed to be going or miss a turn. So then I have to go around the block to catch the turn again, get caught up in concentration again, and miss the turn again. I hate it when that happens.

I have been driving since I was 15 and had my lisence since I was almost 17. I live in Montana so there isn't very much traffic here. I have done a few errors and have been pulled over 5 times and gotton a ticket twice. Sometimes I forget to pay attention to my speedomiter and I when I'm concentrating on the road, I don't even look in my mirrors. I don't think of doing it. I just forget. Everytime I see a police car I keep looking in the mirror and the road so my eyes go mirror road mirror road mirror road to make sure the police car doesn't decide to turn around and pull me over. That happened in June. I see a police car on the road and I see im going ten miles past the speed limit and I slow down but didn't even know the officer had turned his car around and go after me. Here in Montana where I live, Policemen do not turn on their sirens which makes me mad. So when i happened to look in my mirror, I see the police car is right behind me so i pull over. Lukcily I didn't get a ticket. Now everytime I see a police car, I look in my mirror constintly until i decide he isn't going to turn aroudn and go after me.
I have troubles in judging distance but it didn't stop me from getting my lisence.
Id just keep driving and ignore him till he does turn on his lights or siren.. pulling over just because a car is behind you is admitting you did something wrong
Let me guess.. his first question was "Do you know why I pulled you over?" to which you answered and basically told on yourself because he didnt really have a reason he just pulled up behind you and you pulled over so he knew you had a guilty concience but didnt know why ![]()

No, you have to pull over when they have their lights on. if you don't it can get you into deeper trouble. One time I was driving and Mom was in the car with me and all of a sudden I saw a police car on the other side of the road and he had his lights on and he was right behind this other car that was going by me so i pulled over because I was informed when I see lights on I pull over so I pulled over and my mother freaked out about it and I told her the police car had its lights on and she said I didn't need to pull over because he was pulling that other guy over and I told her but I was told when I see the lights on, I pull over. But the real reason why my mother freaked out was because up ahead, there was a biker and she got the wrong impression I was going to hit him even though he was way up ahead.
I'm a very good driver now, but starting was interesting. I took the standard driving class in high school. I remember when the teacher was processing mid-terms. They were the fill-in-the-bubble tests that you just run through a scanner. It made a little click sound on wrong answers, so most tests made clattered as they went through. Mine was the only one that went "whoosh!" right through, perfect score. The class was astonished.
Then came the test on the road. OMG! What a disaster! What's funny is I didn't even realize I nearly made the teacher have a hard attack. I thought I was doing fine. She had me pull into a parking lot and said to exit the other corner. I cut STRAIGHT ACROSS all the parking lanes diagonally! Woo hoo! Had no clue that was bad. Then I looked over and she was clutching her chest and her eyes were squeezed shut. Then she says, "OK, now this driveway is steep so take it slowly." *BUMP* Everyone in the car winced as I scraped the front bumper on the road.
Oh well. I had to redo it but I made it second time. I got my learner's but didn't get my real permit until I was almost 18. I just kind of didn't care that much for a while. My peers didn't get that at all.
