I've been driving since I was 18. Dad would b*tch at everything I would do while driving. It got so bad, I had get my maternal grandmother to teach me how to drive.

Same here. I could have learned sooner, but my dad was mean as F**K and yelled at me over every inconsequential thing when we were out driving. I couldn't really relax and learn anything. :?

I didn't really start learning until my mother took me out.

I think a lot of people with autistic spectrum disorder can have a number of other issues too.

With autism/aspergers - traits are to overanalyze, be overly concerned, expect things to happen a certain way, and find it difficult to understand social conventions (the road does have social interaction).

People with autistic spectrum issues also sometimes have problems telling left from right, organising themselves and visualised maps/routes.

I have all of these issues, but in addition.

Meares Irlen syndrome which makes it very hard for me to pick out useful information from the visual picture I see through my eyes.

ADD - find it very difficult to concentrate and am very prone to zoning out. With walking or cycling I can go miles with being totally "out of it" lost in a state of limbo or daydreaming. This would be highly dangerous with driving.

Also, some narcolepsy issues. Certain things like road/wind/vibrations in a car can zap me into an instant sleep a lot like how a hypnotist.

So driving is almost an impossibility for me.

I have not communicated all my problems with friends or family so its getting pretty difficult as I am expected to drive.

I drive. The hard part for driving now is the social interaction if someone gets into an accident even if it is not your fault.

I drive, and I am good at driving now, but I used to be bad, but I drove more, so I am good now. I still suck at parallel parking, not many chances to do it around LA/SD.
