Sometimes I wonder if the reason no one but me seems to recognize that I am severely disabled, because of both AS and ADD, is because I am not miserable.
I don't see any reason or logic in wallowing in misery over that which I have no control.
Unfortunately, I also think that because I'm not miserable, I neither appear miserable or disabled, so I can't get any of the help I know I need. I had a friend years ago who tried to get help for other reasons, and couldn't get any. Once, he disappeared for three weeks. When he reappeared, he told me, "Guess what? If you show up at a crises center wide-eyed with hair messed up and ragged, dirty clothes, and say, 'I feel like I wanna go on a rampage, killing and maiming everyone in sight,' you'll find out what a rubber room with a tiny little window in the ceiling looks like from the point of view of a straight jacket really quick!"
The guy was a good friend who didn't have it in him to hurt a fly so I knew how ridiculous his statements to the center were. It's a good story though, that demonstrates the extremes some people feel forced to go to, to GET any help.
I've been tempted at times...
