Autistic culture is NOT autism. It's a culture that emerged from autism. Having autism does not make you part of the autistic culture.

Yes, it is pretty clear from this thread that some people with autism can only see it as a disability, and do not want to see it any other way.

I have a bunch of stuff clicking together lately, and this morning's epiphany is that an old friend was more like me than I realized and she passed me an unfinished pattern before she died, which I finished, and found much more. If that's not culture I don't know what is.

I definitely see the patterns are like maps. Sometimes they are actual maps of places. Stores rearranging drives me mad & when I wasn't driving & was shopping w/ friends they found this level of frustration so funny I got to laughing at myself over it too..."oh I am doing it again...let's go shop near a big blind community. They never rearrange!"

And that's why my close friends love me. I don't look at the world or problems the same way everybody else does.

Mind if I ressurect this post and we continue this discussion about autistic art, patterns, processing, and sharing?

I know when I'm heavily processing patterns I totally tune out the world, which can be hazardous (not to mention seen as rude or wierd) so I have always avoided it.
Now I'm realizing using patterns help me function better, but if I cross a certain line I seem to be headed for a meltdown after I come back out of it.

I made the mistake of rarely taking notes on ideas/patterns and keeping them all in my head...what do you do?
This was a big problem when I had interference making it difficult to concentrate. I was really kicking myself.

Do you ever share your patterns (aside from paintings) and have you run into any autistic problems with that?

Very glad you've resurrected this thread.

As an artist - photographer, I know that when I hyper-focus on taking pictures, people are going to make nasty, pointed comments about how anti-social or silly I look. Oh well. My artwork gets hung up in art galleries and museums. So I can live with the comments.

And please do take notes! I just had a neat technological idea the other day and am super-glad I documented it, otherwise I'd be, like you, kicking myself about now for having forgotten it. As for sharing, many people don't care. Oh well.

I'll have to go back and check this thread for poetry, I see.

What kind of camera do you use? I'm very glad to hear you have work out there...in museums! I'd love to see it.

I don't usually forget my ideas/patterns. They get really set in my head, although sometimes need a refresher. I've always used these patterns to help me cope, do art, but I've never been able to talk to anybody else about them or had Simon Baron-Cohen's valuable information to give me insights. I've learned my lesson...write/draw...whatever...much easier to access the pattern/info under stress if it's on paper.
The one that has me stumped is the pattern with no labels that started out with a bunch of impositions and is now down to 2. How can I be working on a pattern and not know what it is? lol It seems I must hide some things from myself. I figure I'll know when I'm supposed to.

I think it's okay with me that many people don't care about the sharing. It's that the right people do and that IF I come up with something new that is worthwhile and helpful it makes it into the right hands...or mind...or whatever, lol.
I made up a new color of cold natural oxidative dye this month to try out. Never heard of it so it might be a new thing. Those things I was warned long ago to take notes on.

I love your poem. I am especially fond of the perseids because they are my "birthday light show" every year. I can't really see them well here but when I lived out in the country it was a fantastic show.
And when I was speaking of poetry here on WP...I meant the entire site. I stumble across short and long poems by all kinds of people on all sorts of subjects continually scattered everywhere. Some of them are excellent.
But more importantly, this place is incredibly rich in the things that count most, when they count most.

You've clearly earned the right to say "I told you so", and you confused the hell out of me then but I get it now, and I think that is sooo funny. That's a good sign.

Grant, you have a lovely FB page, and you dropped a lot of breadcrumbs on the way in but I pretended not to notice. I was here for a long overdue lesson and I was really focused on it because I needed to use it.
I really do need to dig out photos of my art and start sharing it, and this thread has inspired me to start drawing and painting again and that is good. I've had a block on that for awhile now.
Have a sparkling day! Oh wait...maybe in light of my past month or so that's like a cheerful autistic curse.

I have to completely agree with this. I think that autistics are very creative and it does not take talent for drawing or music or sculpting or literature to be creative. Extreme systematizes are creative, mathematics are creative, finding patterns, handling and solving puzzling dilemmas, etc.

I sure wish I was better at math. I have never understood why mathematics and statistics are so very hard for me to understand. I have been interested for years but I just CANNOT do it. It takes me a great deal of effort to do basic algebra and, from the first time I took it in school to this day, I never manage to get a grade other than a d- to a d+. However I am great at word search puzzles. I told my roomate that the way I search it is lets say the word is "Serendipity." I start from the up-left corner and find Seren. To minimize trouble I start with S and once the S is located I find S E R and if there are SER that does not belong to the word I add SERE and then the next letter until I find the word. This does not take as much time as it sounds like, and I know this because I can finish the same puzzle twice as fast as them. They also just find whatever word they see first, I go down the list.

Well, but the green and red one Does actually hurt ... my eyes are That sensitive. As for blue and gold though, hopefully they'll be better because they're my high school colors.

As for the type of camera, let me start by saying that my best pictures were taken on my worst camera ... it's actually the vision / dream of the photographer that matters more than the machine, IMHO. That said, I prefer ultra-zooms. Right now I have a real nice Canon SX40. The zoom lets you frame the image with a whole lot of freedom.

As for my photos, here's one that's been in an art gallery. It's called "Mineral Water:"

I love that photo! Thanks for sharing! I think I am going to be bold and share my latest, because it actually did start as a compilation of lines and curves, then shaded correctly.
