Are we geeks?

I don't like to consider myself a geek because that would stereotype me into something that is often regarded in this country as, not a good thing.

My interests in: Roman coins, DMU trains, Nike air modules, Coil airspung suspension, Mercedes-cars and interior, airbags, Mercedes-Citaro and lowfloor buses, E-ink, LCD-TFT displays, passenger jets-aviation and particle physics, might qualify me to be labelled as a geek.
My level of focus and knowledge that I have voluntery studied in these interests makes me wonder whether I deserve to be labelled as something more respectable.

since by definition, geeks bite off the heads from living animals (or dead rotted ones!) for the entertainment of crowds and money...

i don't qualify.

i do however, spend roughly 5hrs a day on a microscope sitting in a coldroom @ 10C everyday...

so, think you got me on the nerd thing.

Hmm let's see. Well would you consider me a geek or a nerd if the only things you would see in my room would be tiger this and that and then a mixture of Final Fantasy 8 stuff. When you take a look at my book shelf you would see books of science fiction mostly Star Trek. What then would you call me? I'm looking for an actuall opion here.

Where'd you learn that?

If it's the Doctor Who two-part novel Interference, I'm a little less startled!

I am a geek, I always have been a geek, I would be a geek if I had a normal brain too

I wear the title with some amount pride

I feel I'm too lazy to merit being called a geek; not sure about nerd, but that most likely does apply.

I wish geeks and nerds could somehow take over the world; then it might not seem such a Wrong Planet after all.

Geeks and nerds have hero status in my eyes.

Me, too! I have actually said those exact words. I hold geeks in very, very high regards, which is why I adore my one professor so much. I have never met a bigger geek than him. I still think nerds aren't nearly as hardcore, so I don't admire them. But geeks? They just plain win...

umm... i read dictionaries when i was younger...

ill link ya the www.dictionary.com definition:

1. a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.
2. a peculiar or offensive person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.
3. an expert in computers (a term of pride as self-reference, but often considered offensive when used by outsiders.)

there's all sorts of fun words to know...

like "orgy" techincally means a naked foot party... the romans coined the term... so they could kick back and relax without sandals (and have sex!) although the www.dictionary.com doesn't include that tidbit:

3. orgies, (in ancient Greece) esoteric religious rituals, esp. in the worship of Demeter or Dionysus, characterized in later times by wild dancing, singing, and drinking.

just think of oedipus and of "oedipal complex from Dr S Frued... and you should see the foot connection
