People have jumped on me for doing this more times than I can count. And I try SO hard to not do it, but I find it almost impossible to stop. I never correct people on abstract concepts or their opinions on a topic. But if you make a statement of fact that is obviously wrong, shouldn't you EXPECT to be corrected? It seems to me that you'd appreciate it so that you won't say it wrong the next time. But apparently that's not the case. People would rather wallow in their ignorance rather than learn something.
And just to be clear...when the shoe is on the other foot and I am corrected, I'll double-check my sources, and if I am indeed wrong, I will concede to the person who corrected me. Really. It will piss me off if someone corrects me arrogantly, as if they were trying to show me up. But if they just happen to know more about a topic than I do, I'm totally cool with it and appreciate the new knowledge I just gathered.

Go as far as you can see. When you get there, you will see farther.
