Why anyone would WANT to have ASD is actually baffling to me and downright ludicrous. It is usually teenagers who fall into this category.

The people who want to have it usually act in at least some ways typical of people who actually do have ASD. Having ASD would help them to make sense of themselves, otherwise they are just abnormal outcasts who have no idea why they can't fit in. It's not just random people wishing they had ASD and all the traits that come with it.

Personally, I believe that it's usually people who are loners or geeky who want an excuse as to why they don't fit in with others, so it seems "edgy" and unique to say oh it's because I have a disorder that means i'm smarter than you all which is why you don't like me.

I always thought wanting to have it meant wishing they had it so they have an excuse or something or get special privileges. It's like how a kid wishes they could have a wheelchair or crutches because they look "awesome" or a kid wishing they had some sort of disability so they could have a toy in class or leave during class time or have more time on their tests and school work or leave class early to go to their next one or be allowed to come to school ten minutes late or have less work to do on their assignments. To me it's a reek of ignorance. I will accept it more in kids because they don't know any better but I think an adult should know better.

Now wanting to have it means hoping they have it to explain their symptoms and the issues they are having. If they don't have it, then they are probably just normal with issues and they have to try harder to over come them and they have no understanding and they're screwed. It's like having problems with your digestive system and doctors keep telling you you're fine but you know something is wrong and you don't know what it is and you want it to stop so you keep going back and trying to get the doctors to listen to your symptoms so it will be like they want to have something because it then explains what is happening to their body.

I think there are multiple reasons why an individual would wish an ASD on themselves. You can seperate such people out into 2 camps: Those seeeking a free ride and those seeking solace.

The former probably have come to associate mental illness with the great minds of the last century, they want a piece of the action and find that aspergers comes hghly recommended. The latter (I fall into this category) discovered ASD and something clicked, as time goes on they discover that every aspect of their personality and nuerology is touched in some way by the diagnosis. It takes flaws like executive functioning and processing difficulties and puts them within a framework which allows you to objectify and target them with tried and tested methods. When you sweep that rug from under their feet a great source of validation is suddenly gone which can be extremely painful and a shock to the id/ego.
