How many fellow Aspies have experienced parental rejection?
My stepmom's family took one look at me, spit in my face, accused me of committing a bunch of crimes, and threw me out.
Other than my mom and her sister and parents, that whole side of the family pretty much spit me out by the time I started school.
The funny thing is, most of them are on the spectrum somewhere, and hide it very carefully with much zeal and shame. My grandpa's sister had one profoundly autistic son; he spent over 30 years locked in a bedroom until one of his brothers "rescued" him. Nice family. We haven't had much to do with any of them since Grandpa died-- they were cruel to him because he stuttered, and foul to Grandma because she's Italian.
My dad's sister and brother-in-law and their kids USED TO make the butt of every joke, and tell me I was too stupid to teach anything to (and then tell me I was useless because I didn't know what they wouldn't teach).
Then I grew up, moved to town, and had a kid. They started being nicer.
THEN I moved away and had a whole bunch of kids. Now it's like they've forgotten the old days. All we talk about (and we talk OFTEN) are fond reminiscences and how we were always very close.
I don't get it. I really don't. I'll take it (though I don't expect it to last if I ever move home), but I really don't understand it.
I guess nobody's perfect??
I have been really, really lucky in family, by and large.

BuyerBeware, I'm so sorry you've had to go-through all of that----it just makes me about half-sick to my stomach when I "hear" (read) stories like yours.
My biological family's the same way. One of my sisters and I "met" again, a couple of years ago (after being estranged for, like, 25 years), on the Internet. She was talking about things in a way that, if we wouldn't have been on the Internet, I would've been lookin'-around t'see who she was talking to. My theory is it's because she's got 4 kids now, and she wants to give a good impression to them, about our family. (My family has a really bad reputation for their behavior, and all the "in-fighting" {constant fighting amongst themselves} that they do.) That might be what your family's doin'.
You don't sound like you trust them / trust that their nice behavior will last----I don't blame you, I wouldn't either (I don't trust my family to give me the correct time-of-day.)----and, you shouldn't; you would just be opening yourself up, to a WORLD of hurt.
The very best to you and your kids!!

Even though I am the elder son, my parents have always treated me like an orphan they picked up from the streets while they lavished love and affection on my younger brother who is NT. My parents always acted as if they were doing some huge benevolent act of charity by letting me live with them while I was growing up.
