hopefully a science would have been developed, that would aid in minimizing undesirable mutations during reproduction.

We truly have to ask ourselves: What, truly, is the definition of "undesirable?"

We're walking a mighty fine line here.

Alas, people have different conceptions of what "undesirables" truly are.

Remember: the Tutsis in Rwanda thought the Hutu were "undesirables," and vice versa.

Forgive me for being a little sanctimonious. I'm not usually into heavy debates.

But the idea of "weeding out undesirables" bothers me somewhat.

sorry for not using more precise language I meant things like arthritis and propensity for spinal problems and such. physical disease processes as a result of genetic mutations that weaken key systems in the body over time beyond wear and tear. I'm living proof of that as something to be wished in terms of not having diseases. this will be extremely important in outer space away from existing health care infrastructure. you can't really take a whole hospital with you into space.

But eugenics really, really bothers me.

I don't think they'll be able to come up with a way to tell if somebody will have a predisposition, in general, towards musculoskeletal disorders any time soon.

eugenics is one of those things that one is driven either to embrace wholly or throw out with the bathwater. there must be a middle ground there somewhere where parts of it can be considered un-controversially therapeutic.
