I bring this up because of the recent discussion of Thomas the Tank Engine. As I read that a light went on, and I'd like some feedback.

The point was made that some young aspies like Thomas because of the exaggerated facial features and expressions. I've noticed several anime fans here. The anime style is characterized by exaggerated features, especially the expressive eyes. The depictions of emotion are intense and easily understandable even by those of us who have trouble reading people.

I will also point out that the interesting fact that aspie/autistic girls have become a stereotype in anime. I suspect that these are written to appeal to NT teen boys who want to see cute girls who are not emotionally threatening. One of the first significant possible aspies was Sailor Mercury in Sailor Moon. Others include Ayanami Rei from Evangelion, Yurika Readman from Read or Die, and Eureka (pronounced Eh-oo-re-ca) from Eureka 7.

Anyone have any comments about anime, cute anime girls, or other related subjects?

On somethingawful if someone says they have AS someone will always ask "what's your favourite anime?" and they make a sort meme/joke about it.

I prefer manga to anime because I can look at the drawings and I don't have to listen to the bad voice acting.

I love not just anime, but forms of animation as well. It might have something to do with the exaggerated expressions that you've mentioned. The reason why I enjoy animation so much is because there are no limits. You're not tied down by the laws of physics. Also the squash and stretch technique is what makes the characters more interesting and their emotions & personalities more noticeable.
It's funny because Aspies have trouble reading emotions in the real world. I think it's because most of the time people's expressions aren't as exaggerated as a cartoon's. Maybe if reality was more like animation, we'd have an easier time understanding how people feel.

I got into anime I guess in the 80s because I watched Speed Racer and Transformers. I really didnt call them anime, just cartoons. It was in the 90s, when I was a young woman that I became obsessed. It was Akira and the original Ghost In The Shell movies that got me hooked. I still have the GITS video tape I bought in 1993 or 94 (cant remember) I have watched every GITS episode and movie. I also love Hellsing, Read or DIe, Hell Girl, Cowboy Beebop, Samurai Shamploo, Gungrave, Witch Hunter Robin, and a bunch more that I cant recall at the moment. I just love the stories and the art.

I know not everyone likes it, and now it is trendy, but I still love it- that is what true obsession is, LOL. I do NOT cosplay, though. I am an elegant woman but would look pitiful and stupid as a lolita girl or as Motoko Kusinagi. That is what dolls are for:

I have always been a great fan of mecha, and I find the faceless ones the most aesthetically pleasing. The author I like most is Shoji Kawamori, which is a fabulous mecha-designer other than an anime creator. I watch his anime first, then eventually the others.

He did the Macross shows lol. Sugoi

Anime is a product marketed to NTs. The popularity to anime in America is because a lot of ordinary "normal" kids have become fascinated by stories that are rich, compelling, and emotionally moving.

I wouldn't say that. As others pointed the Japanese Otaku and Hikkimori that a lot of the moe and chibi fanservicey stuff are focused on aren't neurotypical, even for their culture. So it's not neurotypical and popular, except stuff like One Piece which is popular among a lot of japanese society. Some parts of Japan barely have anime displayed on 'regular' TV, and they get if from bootlegging just like in the USA :P

Quote:
In an attempt to market these stories to emotionally insecure, teenage NT Japanese males, the writers of some stories include cute, female characters with varying degrees of spectrum disorders. These characters are seen as non-threatening, and are very popular among boys who don't know how to talk to girls. There are far more Sailor Mercury websites than there are for any of the other sailor scouts. Some aspies may identify with these bookish, introverted heroes.

Also see Edward from Cowboy Bebop. However I don't get why bipolar bit......I mean Tsunedere characters are so popular. (see Clannad). I can understand Moe and Lolicon fanservice, alll redblooded animu fans love that - but that Tsuendere s**t.....eh. Too contradictory. Also, most slice-of-life (K-ON im looking @ YOU) sucks..

Quote:
The Japanese have noticed that more and more anime fans are dropping out of society and living in a subculture of internet, bookstores, maid cafes and cosplay shops. Others are simply becoming urban hermits living locked inside their apartments and spongeing off their parents. For a view of these things from inside the culture, download Densha Otoko and Welcome to the NHK.

Rofl. f**k yeah Welcome to the NHK. Densha Otoko is somewhat different, but still funny. Getting people off a damn imageboard (forum) to ask him how to get a girlfriend. Reminds me of stuff off other internet forums.

EDIT: Yes answering OP I am a HUGE anime fan. mainly Mecha and science fiction with some fanservicey stuff (Strike Witches and Kodomo No Jikan...)

Actually, you can thank Betty Boop for Anime (the Japanese loved her and evolved from it). Bit of historical FYI :D

I think Sailor Moon/Serena/Usagi has it too. She's clumbsy and obsessed with video games and comic books. Essentaly she lives in a fantasy world. I can see some AS traits in Ami but not as many as I see in Usagi.

I personaly detest anime (aside from Salior Moon) because it's okay to be obsessed with that but when people found out about my obsessions with certian animal species, I was regarded as a freak.

Anime has gotten popular lately. Anime cons are full of neurotypical people now, including people who go to party/enjoy the "weird and craazy scenes" and don't watch much anime >_<

I first got into anime when I was a kid. I did not realize it was anime until I was older. I have a very long backlog of titles to watch, problem is that I don't have the time to start watching them. But some day I will start going through the backlog...some day. Possibly this friday.

The huge eyes creep me out. It makes me sick that American animators are trying to copy the style. I had to give away my "Petz" DS games because it irked me because the people in it were drawn in that style. Was it even necassary to put people into it but WHY must everyone copy the gargantian eyes?

I don't like it either. It's a yet-another-stupid-hype, and I'm not into it. Since this fever is on, many talent artists are on, being without their real style, only copying a scheme, and that makes me just sick. Anyway, what's so special about it? Why do everybody have to draw those distorted faces?
(Anyway, I don't understand any kind of hype. Neither any console hype, not the mac/ipod/iphone hype. Why do people tend to lose their heads?)
