I heard recently that New Jersey is saying they have 1 in every 95. I think the increase is a number of things. More people getting recognized that would in previous generations slipped through the cracks and just have been labeled a weirdo. Also I think there is some overdiagnosing going on where toddlers are now getting diagnosed because they obsess on the same cartoon character for instance. I think parents refuse to admit they just have a stubborn difficult child so they try to get drs to diagnose them with autism when they really are not autistic but really just misbehaved brats. But then I see so few normal kids these days it makes me think something is in the environment or genepool just making more autistics.
It would be interesting to see a study on autism in children born as preemies. There is a HUGE increase in preemie births. Through technology these children are forced to live on when in generations past tiny preemies would have died within a few days of birth. I have heard a lot of preemies go on to have Downs, vision and respiratory problems, but what about autism? Basically these preemies get brain damaged because they are overwhelmed being forced into the world before their brains are fully developed. I volunteered in a preemie nursery and we were required to whisper and work in the dark so as not to overwhelm the preemie nervous systems. Before man tried to play God these brain damaged individuals would have been allowed to die.
I also think the overuse in drugs and alcohol causes moms to give birth to more birth defected babies.
