Could be an obsessive compulsion. I know one time I was watching some sort of program about OCD and similar conditions, and while a lot of people will get habits they have to obsessively repeat some will get thoughts they can't get rid of. Like one woman on there was afraid she was going to kill someone, because she had obsessive thoughts about stabbing people. So perhaps it is some form of OCD condition, in which case there is help for it.

Do you find the thoughts about suicide distressing? or have you been tempted to actually attempt it ever?

To really be suicidal you'd have to have a desire and intent to commit suicide like you're feeling so miserable that the release of death seems like the only way to end it, and doesn't really sound like that is what you are experiencing. That is good though I've been suicidal and its not a good feeling.
