In Nova Scotia, Canada, we usually have three meals each day. The first one is breakfast and is eaten after people wake up in the morning. The second that is normally eaten at noon is lunch, but it's also commonly called dinner, and the third is called supper and most people have at around 5 PM. "Night lunch" is also used to describe a snack or a small meal that a person might have at night or before going to bed.

When I lived in a group home and had to wash the night lunch dishes for the week I really hated it because there would be about 50 used teacups piled up in the sink. That's how it is when you have to live with at least 10 other people.

We, in the US, call the evening meal either "dinner" or "supper," depending upon the locale.

The noon meal is rarely called "dinner," and is almost always called "lunch."

In the South, the midday meal is called "dinner"; the evening meal is called "supper". Historically, the South was very rural, and farm workers preferred to eat their largest meal in early afternoon, after much of their work was finished. This usage partially survives to this day. Some people make a distinction, saying "lunch" to refer to a quick meal at work, and "dinner" to a hearty weekend meal with family or in a restaurant.

Consider the term "Thanksgiving dinner", even though it usually starts in the afternoon. The English language shifted over time and evolved into regional dialects, but this term "fossilized", due to Thanksgiving's historic roots.

I always thought that this forum was mis-labeled. What they meant is that it is "general discussion" rather than "general autism discussion". I mean, this is by far not the first post here that is not autism-related.

Well, Finland used to be part of Russia before the revolution.

But the name of the area is "general autism discussion."

So how come you don't have a problem with everyone else that posts non-autism topics here, but you only have a problem with me doing so?

I have mentioned it to others too when I've had something to say about their topic. Also, just because others do something doesn't mean you should, too.

So have you made this reply on half of the threads here? I mean half of the threads here are off topic. Do you make sure to point this out on every single one of them?

If the answer is no, what is it that makes my thread "worse" than the other ones? I mean since you chose to say it on my thread and not on others, there has to be "some" difference.

How did a culture-related thread turn into a debate about the forum topic? :?

One of the attributes of Aspies is:
* pattern of black and white thinking

This is a good example. In this case Fireblossom is technically correct because the category General Autism Discussion reads "Talk about anything that has at least something to do with Autism, Asperger's, ADHD, and life. Other unrelated discussion belongs in the Random Discussion forum."

But on the other hand QFT is also technically correct because the comments by Fireblossom is off topic on the subject of Russian Way of Eating.

So both are examples of black and white thinking. I suspect most NTs would just drop the issue and move on because they live in a world of many shades of gray. They would say that putting the thread under General Autism Discussion was probably a simple mistake and the the whole purpose of this site is to help Aspies and those with ASD.

I guess from my perspective the primary rule of thumb is "Don't Flame the Board".

If you look at how it is in practice you will find that there are far more posts in "General Autism Discussion" the there are on "Random Discussion". This makes me think that any "general" topic belongs to "General Autism Discussion", while the "Random discussion" is for TRULY random topics -- such as "count up to 1000" post we had the other time.

You are misrepresenting what I was saying. I don't care whether its on the subject of Russian way of eating or not. What I care about is why is she taking an issue with me when she doesn't take an issue with anyone else. So if she were to send me a PM about it I would have objected in the same way -- even though it wouldn't have been on this thread.

Now, this I agree with. General Discussion is fairly appropriate for any life's problems, even if not directly caused by autism/AS. Random Discussion is basically a thread graveyard. I remember two times in the past when a mod moved my thread from General to Random for no good reason. Both times, the thread faded into nonexistence within less than a week, due to being drowned out by "count to whatever" threads.

Funny how the regimented Russian meal structure---soup, entree, dessert, in that order---is almost AS-like. Even though according to the way my friend from Belarus described his life in the old country, the culture is far from aspie-friendly. (And now that we talked about AS, this thread once again belongs in the General forum. :D)

See the part in italics. I won't bring up the subject in every single thread since I don't even open most threads, just ones that I think I might have something to say to or that sound interesting. I opened this thread 'cause I thought it might have something to do with sensory issues caused by Russian food or how Russian food doesn't cause you the kind of sensory issues that other foods do. In other words, it could have had autism related content. Also, my first comment started with the question:

Quote:
Why is this in autism discussion?

I don't have a problem with you starting a topic like this here, I asked why this was here because I thought it might have some direct link to autism in your mind that I simply missed. But then you said:

In order to correct your misunderstanding of what this part of the forum is meant for. And then you made it personal, focusing on the fact that I pointed out your mistake instead of someone else's. As for the reason why, like I said earlier, I pointed it out because it was one of those that caught my attention. Just like I did in school as a kid, correcting teachers' mistakes if I noticed them.

Well yes, though my first comment was on the subject, commenting the bread and soup -thing brought up in the opening message, so it's not like I came here just to point out the wrong location.

Thanks for explaining it! Now I understand its not personal, and sorry for taking it the wrong way.

I guess, the reason I took it personal is that it happened to me on other boards when I became really unpopular. I guess on this board it wasn't as explicit as elsewhere but sometimes it feels that way, so I thought maybe this was that too. But thanks for explaining it wasn't the case.

And by the way, maybe it would be a good idea to ask forum administration to introduce a new forum for general topics. Like I mentioned, "random discussion" doesn't really do it since it has things like count up to 100. So maybe some "other" general topics section is what we need.

Good idea, even though there may be some overlap among them.

General Autism Discussion can be for things directing related to autism. Things like getting diagnosed, putting abusive therapists back in their place, finding the best antidepressants, etc.

General Life Discussion can be for living with autism. Things like ordering a pizza by phone, persuading one's parents to get a dog, eating meals a certain way, using alcohol to feel better, etc.

Random Discussion can continue to serve its current purpose: counting games and totally off-topic threads.
