Kevin Trudeau is an alternative practitioner. He has written books about "cures" for diabetes, multiple sclerosis, cancer, the common cold, influenza, and believe it or not, autism. Those are just his major subjects, though. He claims that these "cures" are covered up by Big Pharma and the federal government.

However, he was convicted on charges of grand larceny due to misrepresentation and has also lost several slander lawsuits.

Due to him being a convicted felon, he is no longer allowed to promote his books or his beliefs in any shape or form.

I used to see him on infomercials before his conviction and called immediate BS. On one of these, he mentioned Mercola in passing and said that they know each other well and have traveled together.

 Sorry, and it may be "off topic" but reading those things to eat... idc WHO suggests I go back to being a hunter/gatherer, six million years of evolution culminated in me, so I could have a truck, a microwave and videogames...

It's not suggesting you be a hunter/gatherer and don't play video games and whatnot, it's just common sense - the more natural your food is, the healthier it'll be for you. Excepting of course things like poisonous plants, which probably aren't so smart to eat. ;)

Ahh, ok. I've not heard of him (probably with reason if he's as dodgy as you say!). Certainly not on any of Mercola's blogs/newsletters.

I have to say, things like cancer I'm wary of... there are some natural 'cures' that I do believe have a lot of merit, but there are others that imo are blatant BS. There's a lot of money to be made in cancer cures so I'm always a little sceptical. I'd rather go down the natural route though and find out what I can and what are legitimate 'cures' in amongst the BS than use chemo... I know too many people who've died from that crap.

As for diabetes... I have to say, if it's the eating-lots-of-shit-food-your-whole-life-induced form (is that Type 2?) then a change in diet and exercise regime etc has a LOT of merit for getting it at the very least under control, if not totally curing it... if that's the sort of thing he's talking about then I wouldn't dismiss that so quickly. The other type though I think you're pretty well 'doomed' to insulin shots.

The rest, well... yeah. Wary. A change in diet and certain herbs can do a lot, but I'd always use them cautiously and with a doctor's opinion...

No, he claims it's a lack of Vitamin D that means a lot of our immune systems are somewhat depressed, given that Vit D is one of the most important Vitamins to us, yet the vast majority of us are seriously lacking it.

Sunlight (direct sunlight onto the skin, not through glass or with sunscreen or whatever) enables Vitamin D synthesis on the skin; let it form, then let it soak in in the shade, and voila. Sunlight is the best way to get your Vit D dose each day.

So he doesn't say 'lack of sunlight gives you the flu', he says 'Lack of Vitamin D can help prevent flu by boosting your immune system, and the best way to get it is from sunlight'.

Sorry to be pedantic but it's misunderstandings like that that lead to accusations of quackery.

And this is one thing I can agree with; I read a report yesterday saying how researchers are now saying the same thing.

He's got huge amounts of it on his site, he's been going on about it for at least the past year (possibly more; I've only been a subscriber for a year). If you're interested there's screeds of info: http://www.mercola.com (lots of links to various peer-reviewed studies too by the way ;) ). There's also a big report he wrote on it as a kind of introduction to those who aren't so familiar with nutrition/medicine too, not sure if it's still on there though but I could possibly email it to anyone interested, it explains things very well.

Remedies
Folk

Andrographis This Chinese herb is used to prevent or lessen the duration of a cold. It has anti-bacterial properties and stimulates the immune system. Take 300 mg of andrographolide, its active ingredient, daily. Take with food. Never take during pregnancy.

Astragalus This Chinese herb has been successfully used for centuries for colds and flu. It stimulates the immune system, so it is better to use astragalus as a preventive measure during the cold and flu season than to clear one up after you get it. May be taken as a tea, capsule or tincture.

Bee balm Native Americans used bee balm to alleviate colds and coughs. Steep two teaspoons of fresh (one, dried) bee balm leaves in a cup of hot water, covered, for four minutes. Sip a cup three times a day. Bee balm has antiseptic compounds that can help heal respiratory infections and clear nasal congestion.

Cayenne pepper Take a teaspoon (or several capsules) of pepper in a glass of water immediately when you feel a cold or sore throat coming on. This should knock it out.

Elderberry extract Extensive studies done in Israel have shown that an elderberry extract under the trade name Sambucol cut the duration of the flu in half.

Ginger Drink ginger tea to help break up a cold.

Hydrogen peroxide
See detailed information under the Tips section above.

Lemon When one is sick, the body usually is over-acidic. Lemon helps promote health by quickly alkalinizing the body. Squeeze a lemon in a glass of water or tea, and drink every couple of hours.

Make a nasal rise by adding one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice and a pinch of salt to a glass of warm water. Close one nostril and inhale the mixture; hold as long as you can, then blow it out. Do the other nostril. This rinse will kill off the virus that causes colds and helps keep the nasal passages moist. You will notice a marked improvement in your breathing.
Onion tea Make a tea by cutting an onion, boiling it, and drinking the juice.

Water/salt This remedy works well when you are stuffed up and your nose runs. In a large bowl or sink add 1/4 to 1/3 cup of salt. Let the salt dissolve, then immerse your face in the water for five to ten seconds; repeat 3-4 times. Keep your eyes and mouth closed, but try to breathe in the mixture. Then try a nasal rinse by putting a few drops of grapefruit seed extract in 1/2 cup of warm water and inhaling it; repeat two or three times, especially before bed and when you get up in the morning. The grapefruit seed extract will help kill off the bacteria.

Zinc lozenges Several studies have shown that taking zinc lozenges beginning within the first 24 hours of the onset of a cold will shorten its duration by about 50%. The lozenges come in zinc acetate, zinc gluconate, and zinc citrate. These lozenges should not be taken for more than a few days at a time as zinc depletes your body's store of copper. If you experience dry mouth or stomach irritation, reduce the frequency of use.

Herbal
Boneset Boil a pint of water to which is added a teaspoon of crushed boneset leaves. Add honey and lemon for flavor. Drink a small glass every few hours. This remedy is good for the common cold or the flu.

I ran into one of Trudeau's infomercials once and he just OOZED con man. Good that the law caught up with him. I hope all the rest of the alternative "medicine" quacks ripping people off have the same fate.

So do I, having heard that little bit about them. Let the *real* ones do their job without their profession being tainted by money-snatching con-artists.

That the FDA thing? on Dr Joseph Mercola

thats took from the wiki site

He criticizes many of the practices of mainstream medicine and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), particularly vaccination and the frequent use of prescription drugs and surgery to treat diseases.
Don't you SEE that these *articles* are designed to make the public relax their attitudes about vaccines - paid $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ by the pharmaceutical corps? Payofffs! One study does NOT truth make. And if this study - no DOUBT funded by Merk, Lily or another - *shows* that autism rates didn't drop (snicker) then perhaps (hint, hint, hint) it's because the MOTHER IS ALREADY CARRYING THE DEFECTIVE GENE BECAUSE SHE HERSELF WAS VACCINATED!
Good ol' mercury, the best gene ever. I sincerely hope you're joking.

His criticism is that drugs etc are handed out too freely as a 'band-aid' to cure symptoms, rather than the underlying problem, which then just continues getting worse (sometimes with added side effects from the drug) which leads to a cycle of symptom cures, rather than problem cures. Which is very often the case.

Vaccines - his criticism isn't so much the mercury thing (I don't think I've ever seen him mention it in relation to autism, other than to say some believe it's related; others on the site have though, naturally) but that they're given far too many, far too young, many unnecessarily (ie chicken pox; gardasil for boys etc) with lots of toxic ingredients; that often the newer ones aren't tested rigorously enough and for long enough (ie gardasil didn't even have a true placebo or get used on the age group it's given to in trials!); and also that in many states now parents don't have the choice to opt out.

Not exactly true...

some states (like mine) have stricter standards than others so opting out is more difficult, but the option is still there.

What people are neglecting to mention is that the studies are showing that the incidence of autism in children that have had vaccinations are pretty much the same as the incidence of autism in children that have not had vaccinations. Autism spectrum disorders are developmental disabilities. Developmental disabilities aren't usually caused by external factors, external factors, may however, contribute to the severity of the outcome. I'm not a doctor. But in doing tons of research for presentations and myself, I am convinced that vaccines have nothing to do with the Asperger's that I have or that my son has.

So, just to throw my hat in the ring, I think the vaccination thing is a bunch of hooey. I know plenty of people on the spectrum that never had them and are closer to the classic scale. I prefer to look at the outcomes as related to early intervention. The sooner that we realise that kids are on the spectrum, the sooner we can implement early intervention and the better functioning we can make them. I'm not on the curebie boat, but I am on the boat that would advocate for relieving of symptoms. I know that my son has benefitted greatly from sensory integration therapy. I wish I'd had it. Would have made a lot of things much better to deal with.
