I'm sure this topic has been well covered, but since I'm kind of a newbie, I haven't seen it before. Most aspies I've encountered have obsessions, whether they're temporary or permanent. What is yours?

Roads and highway numbering systems. So long as I never leave an interstate, I can get anywhere in the US, at least where an Interstate goes.

I think those that I've lived with are thankful mine doesn't take up a lot of room in the house.

I have that same obsession. Which do you think is a bigger anomaly, I-238 in California, or I-99 in Pennsylvania?

Besides that, they are geology, art, architecture, foreign languages and cultures, and certain historical figures.

At the moment I have an obsession with the GR20 in Corsica and mountains, walking and Corsica more generally (esp the language, although havent got around to learning any yet). I go through periods where I am obsessed with my project at work (which is useful). Also on and off certain psychiatric disorders including depression and schizophrenia, AS was also an obsession for a while. I used to have a food obsession (very long one this). As a result I am a good cook. After this I had an obsession with travelling to Asia and south america (this ended after I actually did travel there). I imagine that my GR20 obsession will end after I actually walk it this summer!

I am deeply interested in maths just lately, especially working out density and volume that kind of notation.

Lately I have been reading some books on conflict resolution and since yesterday collecting and using grappling hooks in Second Life. I now have a hookshot, a grappling hook, a complicated weapon that includes a grappling hook and a crossbow with a rope arrow that can secure a line for climbing.

I love this topic! My main obsession for several years now has been photography. I take my camera everywhere I go, and have to photograph most of the things I find remarkable in my day, including my dinner at restaurants or an interesting insect on the grass. I generally plan my weekend activities based on what kind of pictures I'm likely to get, and what sort I need to add to the collection. I especially have to be sure to capture the changing of the seasons, which is a constant effort. My obsessive hobby has also gotten me into some trouble and creates problems with friends and family, who don't understand why a day out with me has to involve several hundred pictures being taken. Usually they just end up getting annoyed with me, but nothetheless I can't stop doing it.

My other obessions at present are symphonic, gothic, and folk metal music, the runes, and all things Norse/ Germanic, especially mythology. (These interests are actually all related, as most of the bands in the above genres are from the Nordic & Germanic regions of Europe and sometimes, mythological and even runic themes are incorporated into the music.)

In response to some other people's obsessions, I wish I was obsessed with maps and highways. I have a terrible time with maps and driving to unknown places in general and have since gotten a GPS. And Markun's zoo planning sounds really fantastic!!

My obsessions are:
1. Abnormal psychology- mainly about autism, depression, and schizophrenia
2. video games- mainly first person shooters and flight simulators
3. Art- I love to draw and paint wildlife
4. building model airplanes- I build the balsa wood ones and believe it or not, I am female.
5. Current events
6. Being confused

I'm really glad I found this website. I'd never even heard of aspergers until a couple of years ago. Gradually I started reading more and as I did I started seeing my entire life described. I'm now considering if I should get a diagnosis. Most of all it makes me realise that although I do need to get by in the world I don't have to always be pushing myself to be someone and something I'm not. For the first time in my life I'm beginning to accept that I just am who I am.

Anyway, all that was prompted by Krista the Pixie saying my zoo planning sounds fantastic. Because I learned that people aren't interested in my obsessions so I should just keep quiet - so it's nice to hear someone being positive - thanks!

Sci-Fi/Fantasy books... I have well over 20,000 and they take up a large part of my apartment.. when I was looking for my new place I had to get an extra bedroom so I'd room for them all. This has been my obsession since I was 4 or 5. Other than adding offshoots to this... computers and gaming... it's been about it.

I'm a roadgeek. I think I'm the sixth person in this thread to have an obsession with roads and/or maps (which is an obsession unto itself, extending far beyond roads). Had no idea that it was so common.

I'm particularly interested in the roads and bridges of NYC, I used to drive around aimlessly at 3am just to see the roads with no one on them.
