I was wondering... Is it possible, i mean.. Since one has a "disability" as society calls it.. Maybe it could be possible to actually get one of those as a "special needs" thingy? I think it certainly would be possible here in Norway, healthcare is good here. I cant really think of anything one can do with these things that are actually dangerous either...

dont even bother passing it through the govornment healthcare system... i doubt they will pay for it... but they are not that expensive... the average PVC coated one with 35 pounds is about 150 dollars... the HD (heavy duty) is about 45 pounds and runs about 200-250 dollars... i plan on buying one when i have the money and am not afraid of my parents questioning me about it

I doubt if many radiographers would wear one oftein, many medical radiographers work from behind a free standing shield. Industrial radiographers tend to use very high energy photon sources for which a 1 mm lead apron does no good. The lead apron might be of use when using low energy gamma emitters in large amounts.

But here are some pictures which you might like.

Yes, the full-body ones you wear in radiology are nice. As a speech pathologist I do modified barium swallows, which is basically watching an x-ray of someone's swallow (I know you've had this and know what it is, but others don't), and the lead apron comes down to below my knees. Very comfy! It can be very hot though, especially since radiology rooms tend to be overheated in general, and I don't like being hot.

I've seen the shield another poster mentioned, but that is really too clunky to use when doing a barium swallow (where you are presenting the food and liquid to the person and watching the swallow real time), and I've never seen a speech pathologist or a radiologist use it. I heard that one speech path in the hospital used it, but she also used a gown, and the shield was for additional protection. One of the other speech paths was complaining about it, because apparently one time when the other therapist was doing a swallow study, she knocked over a whole bottle of barium trying to duck behind the screen quickly.

I am sure that for most radiography that a lead apron is not needed, for example many dentists when they do radiographic work will do things such as step out of the room to use a brick wall as a shield, the lead apron will not protect the hands or the eyes / head. One application where the lead apron would be useful is in heart surgery where things get poked inside the person through veins. The doctor will oftein watch the movement of the things in real time using X-ray equipment.

If you want to see some details of early X-ray equipment then see http://www.bshr.org.uk/html/radiology_history.html

I am aware of some tales from the bad old days, when radiographers thought that skin going red was some sort of allergic reaction to the electric equipment which they used. Some radiographers ended up making suits with hats like Ned Kelly's hat to protect their faces, eyes and heads from X-rays. It ís much better to take advantage of the inverse square law and sheilding to reduce the radiographers's dose. The early X-ray equipment did not have much shielding around the tubes so the X-rays would fly off in all directions.

Guys... you kinda have to remember that it's lead.

Isn't lead poisonous? And don't they say that lead poisoning has something to do with autism or some such nonsense?

Jus' something to think about.

Many modern lead aprons are lead free, they have things like zinc in them. Even if it has lead, if the lead is covered with plastic it should be safe unless you throw the apron on a fire and start to melt and boil the lead.

When I go to the orthodontist I usually don't get to wear one. Sometimes at the dentist I do. I am usually the only one to go back. Do you think I could ask to wear one. I hate the dentist but I like the sorta pressure from the apron. I am confused however. Love being all snug and the lead apron. However don't you dare touch me.
