Just so long as the sappiness doesn't include some schloopy story about some autistic kid saying "mommy" for the first time. Just thinking about that makes me want to vomit. NT kids say "mommy", auties say it later than they do... big deal.

There's a lot of cuteness on the spectrum, though, if you want cuteness. NT kids have NOTHING on autistics when it comes to "saying the darndest things"!

Not slop topic

These soupy soul books are compilations for coffee tables and to read while on the john.

I would contribute, but I suspect they may want "professional" authors!

perhaps we should start with this link. I think it would be helpful and instructional and perhaps we should change our focus to Chicken soup for the neurotypical soul. Since the have them and all.

I think it's a great idea. I admit some of the chicken soup... books are a bit sappy but I think if there was one that applied to aspergers (which of course would mean applies to me) then I'd be very interested in getting one. Maybe we should all contact them? Or petition or something

I could write a book about the things my 6 year old says alone! His delayed echolalia is hilarious. So are some of the things he says to people. (even if they are a bit embarrassing at times)

Chicken soup for the special needs soul would not do it for me. I want speficaly for the Autistic soul. But then it would probably be loaded with stories about curbie parents finnaly "connecting" with their kid.

I can remember one cute bit of delayed echolalia from this kid I worked with at a preschool. We were outside at the sprinklers, which sit underneath some large pine trees. He looked up and said, "Put it on the Christmas tree!" This was in July- what a memory! (he was only two so he wouldn't have had too much experience with Christmas at this point). It seemed especially funny and random because this was the only phrase I'd ever heard from him besides "A bumblebee! A bumblebee!" (repeated ad infinitum) and "The slide! The slide!"

I haven't been on WP since the day of my last post in this thread.
Has anybody contacted them yet? I am going to right now, using a variation of camelonajourney's example. Other people here should contact them too, but change camelonajourney's example a lot or write your own so that they're all different.
Does anybody want to start an online petition?

That could be a good idea. Maybe inform other Autism Spectrum forums and sites, too?

Would it be easier simply to create a book on your own? Have a person gather stories/etc from folks with Aspergers and put them together? Maybe even specifically from this site. A lot of people seem to want the book to focus only on people with Aspergers, VS perhaps autism itself. Also, most stories/etc would come from people that suffer from the disorder versus parents or caregivers.

Not that they could contribute, but I think a book dedicated to adults with Aspergers would benefit lot of people.

Of course I have no idea how to go about getting published or how hard it is. It is merely a suggestion/idea.

I can't do that, but if anyone on WP can, why not?

Even if Chicken Soup weren't so awful to begin with, I would not want to be in any project that takes as its premise that we are an "AS/HFA" community.

I can't speak for Anbuend, but I'd prefer that the book refer to the autistic community as a whole, not just those that are deemed "high functioning".

Ditto. I think this is probably what anbuend meant. There are people on here who identify as LFA, and others who probably would be considered LFA by professionals. Others have PDD-NOS. Why be exclusive? Anyone on the spectrum who wants to contribute should have the possibility of being included.
