Are your parents very neurotypical?

My father is definitely not NT. I don't know exactly what flavor of not NT he is though. My mother is probably NT, but with some depression issues. The one thing my family on both sides has in common is high intelligence.

my dad had a lot of AS-traits as well as a mild OCD. I can't remember my mum all that well but on the photos she looks very aspie, hard to say exactly why but I bet most of you know that generic aspie "look". I remember that she wasn't very social, she didn't trust people at all and always warned me to be careful. she hated noise and always cooked the same things, had loads of routines.

that's all I can remember so I guess it's a safe bet that both parents were somewhere within the spectrum.

I have to say no. My mother is not under the spectrum by any means but she has major anxiety issues. My father I am sure has AS.

Pretty much I am the only person who is autistic in my family. This makes it hard (and sometimes impossible) to communicate properly with them. And I am misunderstood quite often. I think that somewhere they have been told or have read that people with autism see things entirely from their own viewpoint, in other words, the views and emotions of an autistic person can be ignored (according to them anyway). And to be perfectly honest, I am fed up with that sort of thing, especially when they imply that I am "non-compliant".

I compare the situation with browser wars. Most people use Microfost Internet Exploder, the most noncompliant and insecure browser (and the one of the most dangerous sources of security vulnerabilities built into an operating system) I have ever heard of in my entire life.

A few people here and there use Firefox or Opera, which are much more secure and standards compliant than Internet Exploder.

My parents are both oddballs. They both have ADD and I wouldn't be surprised to find that either of them was on the spectrum somewhere. Personality-wise I am much more like my father than my mother.

Both of my sisters also have ADD. My brother's the only true neurotypical in the family.

my mom is a bird brain, this is no exaduration and its hilarious. i still love her though, one of my stepdads is your typical creep abuser and my real dad is your typical user of narcotics. or he was, now hes a jesus freak. and THAT is hilarious

Definitely not. My dad has ADHD and Bipolar (I'm pretty sure) and my mom has AS traits (loves animals more than people, excellent at math, not all that social). As for my dad, we have the same personality traits, like we're both extroverted, but other than that, we're total opposites. Same goes for my mom.

My mother was very ordinary. She was social, mediocre, pleasant, emotional, overprotective, and a pretty good caretaker and teacher to me and my brothers. She died 10 years ago from cancer.

My father on the other hand, more than likely has AS. He has always been isolated, aloof, and quirky. While growing up, I never had any other context with which to view him. I accepted these traits as normal, and if anything, imitated them... reinforcing whatever I was already born with.

Looking back, it is so obvious. He exhibits classic traits of AS, many of which I share. To this day, my dad has no really close friends, only acquaintences through work or church... no "buddies" that he hangs out with. He is very analytical and has a great talent for math (worked as an accountant for 30 years). He is deadpan and monotone in his manner and speech, never showing strong emotions of any kind. In social situations, he is shifty and uncomfortable, sometimes saying strange things or laughing nervously. Otherwise he is simply introverted and quiet. He is a good guy, but I don't think he has any idea about AS.

My recent insights into myself and Asperger's may hold some good for him as well, if I am able to get through to him, and he is receptive to it. hope so

I often think mine were narcisists, they always went on about how much better we were than others. My mother used to go on about how she wished we could live in another city because we were so far above the local people. I never quite understood that.

There were other clues over the years too, but I never saw them until after spending many years out of their house living on my own. Is Narcisism a trait exclusive to NTs?

My father could be diagnosed with PDD. Actually most of that family (extended family) is on the spectrum from observation and there are at least three diagnosed excluding me. Brother and sisters are (half-siblings) all pretty much on the spectrum by observation and one is a diagnosed Aspie w/ ADHD.

My Mom had mild to moderate ADHD, and some Aspie traits. My grandfather is probably bipolar, and most of that side displays some characteristics of bipolar. There are no people diagnosed on the spectrum on that side, but I do have a couple of first cousins who fit the bill, and a great grandmother as well.

Perhaps too much info, but needed to get the point across.

I suspect that my father has AS but it was never diagnosed and he won't even dream of getting a diagnosis! But he has so many traits. My mom has bad anxiety but other than that, yep she is "NT". My brother is "NT" too, thats why she was always able to relate to him the best... and it was definitely a problem while we were growing up.

My mum tells me to "stop being silly" when I have to have the table parallel to everything! And she tells me to "act normal" when I do other Aspie stuff and says to me "why cant you be more like Jake [my brother]"! !!

In fact, she is being very hypocritical with the talbe thing coz she needs everything tidy and clean all the time (I always joke that she is like Monica from Friends)... Minor OCD much?

Anyway, I dont call that accepting!

My dad has very strong AS traits and I'm sure I got AS from him. However he has tried to suppress them for as long as I can remember, though he fails miserably in doing so. He hates himself and I think that hatred had rubbed off as violence towards his AS kids when my brother, sister and I were younger.

My mom is very much NT, very much "Why can't you just be normal?!?" and although I'm sure she means well, she drives me crazy!!

Both my parents are definitely NTs. I don't think they have AS traits.
