I work to live, and live to enage in my special interests. Work is second, and special interests is 1st within my priority list. I work to live and live to feed my obsessions, it is a normal plan of my life that I don' want to change. The world is too interesting than to just engage in the same work or the work which has no imagination.
NT's only engage in learning material that relates to their type of work, therefore NT's expect you to know no more than your type of work. However I live a life outside of work, and as boring as a job might seem, my interests gives me meaning in life and full of excitement.

I'm obsessed with video games, and I'm always trying to play each game perfectly trying to do every single thing I can possibly do in them. I can't help it but it always takes the fun away.

Hi. My 5yo son has Asperger's. He has had a special interest since he was about a year old---no kidding---when he decided he would only play with animal toys. When he was 3 he branched off into dinosaurs and although he still likes animals, dinosaurs are his current love. At times his fixation has seemed concerning (like the day he continually tried to rip his ears off because "dinosaurs don't have external ears") but all in all its been a positive thing.

The other night before bed I asked him to choose a bedtime story that wasn't about dinosaurs (with the agreement that he could read his dino books as much as he wanted on his own before bed). He was fine at first but then tears started welling up and he said, "Mom, I can't stop thinking about dinosaurs even if I try. I think about them all day long and I think it's too much." I tried to probe...asking if someone else had told him that he does it too much. He said that nobody told him that, "only I think it's too much...it's TOO MUCH!" This went on for about an hour until he finally tearfully told me he didn't want to talk about it any more because now he had talked about THAT too much.

I reassured him that we love him and think he's a great kid no matter how much he thinks about dinosaurs...tried to point out the positives about how he's learned so much, etc.

It concerns me that he seems to be so emotional about it. Any insights? Can those special interests sometimes feel like an "addiction" that one wants to stop but can't?

I completely understand this, because it often happens to me. Sometimes I get so fixated on my special interests (although I prefer to call them obsessions, because they're not always positive) I feel like I can't escape, like all I can think about is my current obsession, and every time I break away from thoughts of it the same thoughts just keep coming back, like this horrible circular thinking in my brain.

Sometimes, a person can feel trapped in their obsession because it is generally out of their control (their brain is just wired that way, and unlike normal people from what I've heard; people keep telling me to do this: they can't just stop thinking about it and think of something else).

I wish I could stop obsessing over my future and career direction, but it's all I can think about day and night and it's driving me insane. Every conversation I have with people I always end up talking about it, no matter what the original conversation was about. Even my friends get sick of hearing the same stuff from me over and over, but they're really patient and good about it.

My special interest that is currently my most-intense one is definitely like an addiction. When I'm away from the special interest, I feel "down," upset, and empty. When I'm engaged in the special interest, I'm all smiles and laughs, and I'm really giddy and overly happy. It's very hard to deal with; I've never had a special interest that has been THIS intense before. It's pretty much all I think about, and it's definitely all I talk about if I'm given the chance. My mom and best friend really worry about me, because the special interest is literally all that makes me happy, and when I'm not able to do something related to the special interest, I just am so apathetic and often burst into tears. It's not a good thing... But, all in all, the intense joy that I get out of the special interest certainly makes up for all of the "addiction"-like feelings it brings.

Wow, something just made sense to me. Lately I'm unhappy all the time and can't seem to stop being depressed and unhappy, and I think this is because my current obsession (future and career direction) makes me unhappy whenever I think about it.
The happiest periods in my life have been when my obsessions have brought me joy, such as writing fanfic or reading. I wish I could choose my obsessions, but they always seem to choose me.

Interesting specialities topic

All my special interests are pataphysically related, as it is easy for me to do more than one at the same time. :D

I don't think any of my interests have ever over-whelmed me. They just cheer me up even through the toughest time and when I look back over the years, they bring me back so many wonderful memories. I don't see anything bad about that. 8)

Most definitely. My obsessions tend to be very strong and all encompassing, but I also feel as if I should be "living life" or trying to be more NT. I guess those feelings come from my parents trying to force me into the NT mold. Its very frustrating and causes me to have severe depression and anxiety. I'm in my late 20s in case you're wondering. I'm not a kid but they still treat me like one. I guess its mostly because I am kind of low functioning.

I'm obsessed with a cartoon called Storm Hawks. I think about it all the time and practically live in the fantasy world of atmos. I've been really stressed out lately becasue the first half of series 2 has just finished showing in the UK and it's now on hiatus on Cartoon Network so it doesn't look like I'll be seeing series 2 part 2 anytime soon. Seriously, I am so upset by this that I've been crying and harming myself. Deep down I know it's ridiculous, but I just can't stop myself.

All the eps of Storm Hawks are up on YouTube now. They're also apparently getting a third season.

Well, my pc game addiction has taken over all desires to write, draw or do any of my other, more creative, special interests.

It's left me feeling that life lacks meaning today.. since that is all I did.

I realized at age 17 how internet had taken over my life ever since I started posting online. I realized I had to do something about it but it was hard. I wasn't playing with my neighbor anymore, I wasn't watching my shows or playing my video games and when I watch Benny & Joon every Friday, I felt anxious to get right to the computer. Then when my mother took it from me for three weeks, it was a nightmare. I felt lost and empty inside so I was depressed because something big was taken. But once I found a way to save my stories, I wasn't on the internet so much anymore. Then I found Microsoft Word on my dad's computer and started using it for my stories. Now I didn't need to be at the computer all evening and day working on a chapter to my story and posting it. Now I could save it and work on it later.

I have to force myself off the computer these days like going to bed, to shower, to eat. Sometimes I skip my meals because I am too preoccupied on here or with my fanfiction or with chatting. I'm just lazy.

With Benny & Joon, it only lasts an hour and thirty eight minutes because that's how long it is. I do take the movie with me when I travel along with my PS2. I didn't get to watch it in Montana because I was too busy with the computer but I got myself to play my Wii there and play a video game I bought few months ago but never played it. I also played the DS.

Now thanks to my fanfiction with South Park, I got myself hooked on the shows. No Benny & Joon. :( I can't watch two DVD's at once damn it. :x Wait, I have this computer and I watched part of it this morning before work. I even take this computer to work and I write during my break time and lunch break. Yes my obsession has gotten tbhis far, I now have to take my interest to work with me and keep it in my locker and think of my stories all day in my head on the job. Then I hate it when I forget about the ideas I had in my head. I try to write them down if I can still remember.

About Spokane, I have to be near there, I don't want to move far away from it I can never go there or else it be too far. I moved to Portland even though it's further away from the city but it's on the way to Montana so I can always stop there on the way. I can go to Spokane on my days off since I can get there in one day and then back the next day. I also have to eat at Fergusons when I'm there and do the B&J tour but the only place I miss is the park since you have to pay to go there since parking down town isn't free. I could park in the B&J neighborhood and walk there but I'm too lazy.

I also remember when I liked the Teletubbies a lot, I was always watching the shows and the same episode all day when it be on again on PBS Kids. Then I got upset when we lost the channel because it we had to subscribe to it and I didn't even know we were getting it for free when the channel aired. I actually cried and drew Po in my bedroom writing "Bye Beth." Took me a few days to get used to Teletubby free. Then I started watching it on regular TV but it was a nuisance to try and see when it was on since there was no TV guide for local stations and I get upset when the station decide to change the schedule. I don't get upset anymore about a tv show not coming on. I just see it as "Yay I get to keep watching my DVD" "Yay I can keep playing my game" "Yay I can go back to watching my other shows on TIVO." I think Teletubbies was the only show I ever cried over when we lost the channel and be very upset about it I b***h about it to my parents about not having the channel.

I feel for your kid; he's 1 year old, and he already knows he's Autistic. It's a lot to handle. To be perfectly frank, I didn't know what my special interests were 'til I hit 3...cause that was when I got my very first action figures; hooked ever since.

I just think he doesn't know how to handle it yet, is all...and who could blame 'em? He's 1! His mind is still developing! He probably feels overwhelmed beyond anything.

I do have to give you credit for giving in to his special interests, though.

Wish my family'd done that, rather than attempting to take me away from them, because "I was too mature for them".

Spokane I live in lynnwood. My special interest is Wrll and yes it is an obsession. Last year I went out of my way to see if I could Wrll lets say any kind of video. I contantly think about watching video, reading, listening, and looking at pictures. When I was at school in highschool all I could think about was coming home to read erotica. Now since I am trying to write novels I will have to put quotes in my books. And listen to audio or have the tv on when I am writing my novel. I dont find it harmful. Special interests help us and if we didnt have a special interest what would we do. And Wrll is the only obsession that has stayed throughout my life. Wrll is also in the order they appeared in my life. Ive been watching tv since before I was born. Then 2nd grade I started really reading. Then in 6th grade I started listening to Green Day and then music appeared in my life. Then I started looking at porn pictures and I finally got into looking. So Wrll then became my whole life.

And Spokane if you can find a way to get a job out of your computer that would be great or if you can find a way to create your own universe you could write books. Also where do you write your own fanfiction if I read right. Also I wish my eyes right now could handle the computer like you do. And diapers are for alot of people a comfort. Read 5/14s candorville it talked about star trek and how it said to be yourself so the female in that comic said pass me the nachos and the diapers.

We just need to try to find jobs that deal with our special interests.

every since i got an Atari 2600 in 1982 my obsession has been video games. i'd game for 8+ hours whenever possible. This came to explode with the newer MMORPGs (massivly multiplayer online role playing games) I played Everquest from 2000-2008, Medal of Honor Spearhead, Call of Duty series, and now i'm on Warhammer Online.

my peaks were being online at 20-30 hours at a stretch. thats one session. i believe the most i've gone is nearly 36 hours. I can remember once there was a double xp weekend in Everquest. for 3 days straight, i slept on the floor next to my computer with an alarm clock and i had it set to go off every 15 minutes. I'd game for 30 minutes sleep for 15. then repeat the process. i did that for that 3 day weekend. to maximize my xp gain for that weekend. Its called "Grinding" in gaming circles. Typically i'll find a quest or a tradeskill and just grind it out over and over for hours or days. weeks. I literally have lost years of my life to video games.

But i have to do it. there is no taking a break. i enjoy it way too much. but i no longer play more than say, 10 hours at a stretch, with a full time job and 2 kids, i just can't. but i'll put my game time ahead of sleep or eating. for awhile, i'm sorry to say, i put my gaming time before my wife and children and had at one point, stopped working so i could play my game more. i won't tell you about the things i'd do to avoid going to the bathroom rather than stepping away from my precious computer. heh.

Its a need. and i don't see myself ever stopping.

Have you tried video games that have an end or do you really only like mmrpgs?

I've always been interested in this aspect of special interests. It really is like the special interests choose us; we have no say in it, really. An update on me is that I've developed a new special interest since my last post, so it has really helped me deal with the "addiction"-like quality of my most-intense special interest. I don't get upset over being away from the intense special interest now, because I have this new special interest to occupy me. The new obsession is the first really big special interest I've had since I got diagnosed with AS, so it's kind of neat to watch it unfold, now that I know why it's happening. I can now track the stages of special interest development.

Anyone ever thought of creating t shirts and other clothing items for their interest. Ive thought of going to a t shirt website to create a that says Wrll. Anyone else also though of getting an ambigram tattoo with the name of their interest?

Yes.

Anything (object or animal) that my eyes zoom in and focus on could become a potential interest.
