There's said to be an additional unspoken statement to 'shut up' which says 'I don't want to hear what you say' 'I don't like you and want to hear nothing of you' 'I think you're annoying' 'Your opinion is stupid' 'You're unimportant' 'You're not a person whose opinion counts' 'I hate you' and so on.

After reading your post and how you used it in that situation, totally appropriate use of the phrase' "SHUT UP".

His mother is treating you as a person who does not understand the appropriatness of what you said. "You naughty autistic" attitude. Her comments are condesecending because of her ignorance in relation to your intelligence. She is a typical mother, her son could do no wrong and would not be purposely teasing you for a reaction.

It is inappropriate because it is called verbal abuse, although in some situations it is ok to say it. As long as what you say does not come back to bit you in the a**.

What you just said is absurd and immoral. You are implying that the end justifies the means. You are saying that it is not ok to say "shut up" if someone objects, but if no one ojects then its just fine. So the act of saying "shut up" is right or wrong depending on what others arbitarily decide and has nothing to do with the act itself. This is exactly like saying that stealing is ok as long as you don't get caught.

Agreeing with the person who said that "shut up" was a perfectly appropriate response for the situation. The kid was trying to be annoying, or so it seems, so he should've expected as much. In fact, he was lucky, as I see it, that a couple words weren't added between "shut" and "up" to add emphasis.

I am aghast.

The use of the expressive phrase "shut up" should be used with gay abandon and oh joyous frolic as we rough and tumble our way through the odds and ends of this endless game of breathing called "life.".

(anyone for a swear comp?)

My sister used to tell me to shut up all the time. She thought I shouldn't ever be allowed to talk, so no matter what I'd say, she'd tell me to shut up. What's telling is when you call someone one something and they tell you to shut up.

Here's what I mean; my sister used to always like to give me orders like she ruled over me. One day I asked her where she got the authority to give me orders, and she told me to shut up. It just wasn't right.

I had just as much right to talk as she did, so why should I shut up.

Under the circumstances, I would have said either "shut up" or "get out". Given that you'd already asked to be left alone, gone into another room and closed the door, an angry response would have been quite reasonable.

If I had been in this situation and patiently gone to mummy with her bad boy and explained it more politely, the concentration involved would have derailed me for an hour or so after. I would have forgotten what I was doing. Sometimes you need to be brief and to the point so you can stay on-task and in flow.

When I read the title to this thread, I thought it referred to teens saying "shut up" in casual conversation, and was truly surprised to read that "shut up" had been a problem in the OP's circumstances.

:o Well, I suppose it comes down not only what you say but, how you say things too.
Actually, there have been times I've tried to be most polite in trying to speak about things or express a reaction regarding a annoying scenario as, sometimes my attempts have been positive while at the other end it has wound up blowing up in my face yet, I must agree with you that often, it's not easy sometimes in getting your point across wherein; you wish not to appear rude or impolite..

Wow, I have gotten so mich insight on this puzzling dilemma. Thank you, everyone!

Anyways, as an update, now I always make sure to *lock* the door when I want to be left alone to concentrate on whatever I'm doing.
That really sends a message that doesn't send him crying to mommy! (Although he still does sulk pathetically afterwards.)

 And I get my peace, quiet, sanity, and solitude.

Oh yeah, is his behaviour typical of an 11 year old male neurotypical?
I don't quite remember my little brother (who is, indeed, neurotypical) acting like this at age 11, but then again, we were raised quite differently. :?

It's ok when you mean "leave me alone", but something I can't STAND is when people just tell you to shut up for no reason because they don't care what you have to say. My brother has picked up the most irritating habit of saying, "Shut up, b***h," to me in the most disrespectful way you can imagine. Everytime he does it I have this urge to slap him in his face, it pisses me off so much!

Wow that's mean.
Is your mother aware of this?

I, personally, rarely say 'Shut Up' because I know it is perceived by others as rude, but I will use it when other methods have failed.
But if I wasn't doing anything and just sitting around bored, then I would listen to anyone's little jokes and sarcasms for maybe a whole hour!

Don't know, I think so. She wouldn't do anything anyway, she lets my brother get away with all sorts.

It reminds me of how when people type swears, they replace one letter with an asterisk, like s*it or f*ck, I never understood that. You're saying the word, it's blatantly obvious what word you're saying, nothing's really hidden by that one star, but to type the word which you actually mean to say is for some reason incredibly rude, so you have to say the exact same word but apparently make it appear that you don't know how to spell it.

Actually most websites have filters that will turn any correctly spelled swear word into all asterisks, to get around this posters will misspell the word slightly. So in fact it has nothing to do with the posters trying to be more polite, they are in fact trying to make it clear which word they intended to use.

But then comes the purpose of these filters, who are they trying to protect? Is it really such a bad thing to let people say what they mean? Are the children going to be tramatized by reading exactly what they hear when they turn on HBO, or hear dad hit his thumb with a hammer? And as for forums where children don't frequent, what sense does it make prohibiting people from saying what they really mean? If I were to say "you have less intelegence than rat vomit and should go bury yourself in a cave until the day you die", how is that any better than just a simple F*** You?
