I agree. And, in fact, for purposes of this discussion, the NT "designation" is pretty much meaningless. There are people on and off the spectrum you can get along with; there are people on and off the spectrum that you simply won't get along with.
There is also a tendency to villainize those who are NT by thinking that they are capable of all sorts of nasty behavior because they are NT. In reality, that nasty behavior is found just as much in those with AS. That is to say, they aren't NT tendencies; they are human nature tendencies.

Anyway, people are where they're at.
Where they are Might migrate into something else. Might stay where it is. Might alternate between the two.
hold on for a minute, water's boiling for the gelatin - pineapple flavor!
Okay, where was I?
Yeah, just like the majority, probably, of everything else in life, that also exists along a continuum, a spectrum, with few absolutes.
True, there are places to be, ways of being, which are demonstrated to be freer, less burdensome, than others.
Nevertheless, no person has ever lived the life of the other person and thereby gained full understanding and comprehension of the place the other person is in their being and living.

I think some of us are thinking of other people initially disliking us (feeling that happens inside them), whereas others are thinking about other people initially being nasty and disrespectful, but we're having a conversation like we are talking about the same thing, though we aren't.
If a person initially ignores me, doesn't want to be friends, or such, but, isn't disrespectful, nasty, unkind, or anything, then, yeah, they get a chance if they are interested in friendship later.
If someone is nasty and disrespectful, then I'm likely not ever going to be interested in friendship with them. I'm likely not going to like them.
I won't be nasty to them, though. No need to get them back. Ignore them, if possible. If that's not possible, be respectful, but not friendly, and hold my ground when necessary.
The one person who's been the most nasty-horrible to me isn't someone who disliked/dislikes me. The nasty, bad behavior towards me didn't come out of disliking me.

Aspie Quiz: 110 Aspie, 103 Neurotypical.
Used to be more autistic than I am now.
Voted---I don't know. Was tempted to vote--when hell freezes over. (Warning: really bad rant)
<Could they like us? No, they would rather lie to us>
One thing I do know is---I'm tired of misrepresentation of the facts. Of autistics being held accountable for things that aren't our fault. Of being forced, time and time again, to be scapegoated, ridiculed...treated unfairly with disrespect, contempt and cruelty. I'm tired of autistics being seen as a nuisance--when we passionately complain about being mistreated. We're told to speak more softly, no one wants to hear the autistic's POV. We are continually reminded-- it's our fault that we don't fit in....and we are made to suffer abuse upon abuse as a result. We are often just barely allowed to survive, and frequently punished for doing so. When we try to fit in, we are generally told---not good enough, you are not a team player, and there is no use for you. We are made to feel that we don't deserve to survive, because everything is always our fault. We are not allowed to contribute because the rules won't bend to accommodate our differences. And when we take our own lives in suicide, because we can't go on with a pointless struggle....oh well, society looks the other way. When we get angry enough to meltdown or seek revenge, we are told to keep a lid on it, work it through, keep swallowing the bile rising up in our throats....we have no right...no right to self-respect and dignity. We simply need to accept the treatment accorded to sub-humans.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
I believe, as do the majority of those here, that autism is being wired differently neurologically. We do not have a disorder and many of us are very very smart. We should not have to tolerate discrimination and bullying. We are entitled to be treated with the same respect as every other human being on the planet!! Why are we expected to be saint-like and turn the other cheek? For God's sake, we are only human! .. And like almost every other normal human, we get extremely angry when we are viewed as doormats, and tossed aside like stinky rubbish.
.
alba, as usual, I can't applaud you enough. I've been lately feeling some relief from all that you mention and that used to be my life, thanks to my life nowadays revolving more around Aspies and Aspie values than the NT world, and getting a diagnosis, surprisingly, helped me too. Also, a secret that was finally told me by my father made lots of things change in my mind.
Look at THIS and tell me if it makes you feel more part of a different kind of world... (I made it) If it does, let me know and I may have an idea for you.

heh...from that rant you'd never know I was a pretty happy camper. My raison d'etre seems to be advocating for justice. I'd love to be more productive, and more helpful in contributing toward social change for autistics. However, I'm also trying to get a business started and that's taking up a lot of my free time..
