i wasnt bullied except for maybe a couple occasions until i moved to turkey. people thought i was too quiet...i didnt learn the language enough, and they didnt like me because i was american. i got my stuff stolen and broken (not much thank god)...occasionally id get physically hurt. once this kid pushed me up against a bus, he was gonna hurt me more but a teacher stopped him. i also got my hair pulled and once i got eraser shavings put into my eyes. people also liked to squeeze me against the wall with my desk...
i got verbally teased too.

i guess i didnt have it that bad. it stopped after i went to middle school. i had a very small middleschool, with like, 10 people in my class. in highschool no one talked to me for like 6 months, because i seemed weird and quiet....but no one outwardly did anything like namecalling or physical injury...

so yeah. some people on here have had it terrible. :(

Did anyone else honestly mistake pity for friendship, even knowing what it was?

I remember the meanest kids telling me that the few who were nice to me didn't really like me, they just felt sorry for me, and I'd respond that it was the same thing. I felt that if someone thought that I deserved pity, they considered me almost human. People who didn't like me treated me like crap on the bottom of their shoes, so if someone was nice to me because they pitied me, it meant that they didn't despise me, so that they must like me at least a little. I remember thinking about it at length, and being sure that feeling sorry for someone meant that you had to like them. I'm still not sure it doesn't mean that.

When I was 10 or 11 there was a girl in my school who was the school pariah, much like you. I pitied her and liked her both at the same time. Adults may dislike the people they pity, but I don't think children have the emotional distance to do that. I sure didn't. The two feelings were intertwined. The mean kids were trying to put some distance between you and the kids that actually did like you because at that age I think it would be very difficult for a kid to dislike somebody they felt sorry for.

Did I play with this girl and help improve her life? Sometimes but not nearly often enough because I was a coward. I was not that 10 year old who can fight injustice and make social change. Instead I played with her on the sly, something that probably brought her equal parts happiness and bitterness. Why? Because one time the school Mean Kid (there is always one who is meaner than the rest) caught me playing with her. He had never laid a finger on me before that. But he beat the crap out of me just that one time and said it was because I played with her. He said he would do it again if he ever caught me playing with her but if I stayed away from her, he would not touch me at all. Did I bravely stand up to him and say "I'll play with her if I want to. I'm not scared of getting beat up by you." No. Because I was scared of getting beat up by him. So I didn't acknowledge her presence on school property out of fear of him. And I played with her in secret. She tolerated this because I think it was all she could get at the time. Blessedly, her parents intervened and put her in another school.

Bottome line? The kids who pitied you probably did like you but may have been as cowardly as me and so kept it at that level. I'm not proud of not standing up to that guy. But if it's any comfort decades after the fact, they probably liked you but feared the meaner kids and retaliation they would get if they took it beyonf pity.

I was chased around corridors, stalked, sexually abused from Year 7 until last June. The bullies knew my weak spots and used to exploit them.

very little. Strange, isn't it. My appearance was physically desirable, I was blond and very shy and spoke very little. The world doesn't have a problem with that. It was only later in life when I began getting a sense of myself and having opinions that I became problematic to the world. My adult life has been a different story, I have been 'bullied' on jobs all my life. In much more subtle ways than in school, but still bullying.

I was a pretty little girl too but I still got bullied 'really' bad. I usually think it was my crappy clothes but it was more than that. I didn't talk for one, and I didn't know how to play, be competitive or join in games and activities and stood alone in the shadows mostly as a means to avoid being beaten, tripped up, taunted and generally picked on by other mean spirited children. I don't think being pretty, or not, has anything really to do with it.

Severely, for a long time. But people tend to give you less trouble when your my size (6'6" 225lbs-ish) and refuse to take s**t from people anymore. I also take Martial Arts.

However really I take Martial Arts so that I know I could defend myself if I had to. Knowing I can smash a persons face, break several limbs/bones, or cause permanent limb/nerve damage is enough for me, I don't have to act on it.

The worse thing is really when other kid's parents (when I was younger) would use the excuse to the school "Boys will be boys". This is unacceptable and pure BS.

sorry if I offended, I don't know why I wasn't bullied. That is awful what you went through. Honestly I wonder if it's because I changed schools 3 times in 3 years and wasn't around long enough. I was bullied here and there but not serially like I have seen. It happened to my friends, but not me. I wonder if you were bullied *because* the other kids were jealous of your appearance/looks...I know only from my adult life that having 'looks' without the social skills to make allegiances and get protection from other girls can really leave you open and vulnerable. I never felt I was attractive as a child at all, I was preyed upon so I spent my childhood feeling dirty and vile...it's only now when I look back at the photos that I can see it. By all rights I should have been bullied, because I certainly didn't have any defenses, but I wasn't. I always befriended the people that were bullied though.

I was never in schools for more than a month or two at most but I did look dramatically different than other girls in how I was dressed and groomed so that's what I attribute it to a lot. I was also always on the outside looking in so to speak socially and always wondered why I didn't know how to do what the other kids did when they were playing with each other or talking, that sort of thing. I can't bear to use the words I would have to in order to describe it. It's very painful still. No offense taken, I understand. It's hard but it's also good to be able to talk about it a little bit. I was a beautiful little girl too but didn't realize it until I was grown and looking at pictures. People who abuse leave a lasting impression on our psyche and the damage is devastating and nearly everlasting. I'm sorry you felt preyed upon. I know how that feels because I did too. :(

Id sue the school for that if I were you. Here in Canada, if that happened and it was due to no supervision, the school would be taken to the cleaners in court. That is negligence on the school's part, and you could also sue those kids parents because as parents, they are responsible for the torts committed by their kids and assault is a tort in civil court.

Once in awhile some older kids would try to bully me, or, more specifically, threaten to beat me up.
But I was a big kid. Tall and heavy (which I hated but that's another issue). And though my bio-dad had abandoned me I knew he had been a boxer. So I would retort aggressively "go ahead, come on over! My dad was a boxer and I'll beat you up!".

Given my size, my supposed "knowledge" of boxing people, and my bluntness; most kids walked away. Walked away yelling taunts and threats, true, but walked away none the less.

It got pretty bad at points. The worst year or so of it worsened my sensory issues related to hearing (rather than curing my "hypersensitivity" through "exposure" as my teachers and parents thought would happen) with post-traumatic stress symptoms. A lot of the other stuff made me distrustful and resentful towards authority for a good long while, since almost no one bothered to come to my defense, even when the bullying was particularly egregious, and I was in fact often punished for reacting. In general, I learned a feeling of great separation from the rest of the world because of how I was treated in school, and that's never really gone away.

I went to a very small private school that was part of the church I went to. The entire school, K-12, had about 45 students. I had no way to get away from the bullies. I had constant teasing, harassment, and sometimes physical abuse. The school was set up in a way that we all had our separate cubicles and we pretty much taught ourselves by reading booklets. Students were pretty much able to move around at will so there was no break from anything at any point in the day. And yes, sometimes my teacher would also join in. I wasn't supposed to but I always went home for lunch (I lived next door).

The idiot teacher wouldn't do anything about what was going on. There was no point in complaining to the principal because he was the pricipal. Finally a few months before my release date (aka graduation) he admitted it was so bad that I might have to finish off the year doing all my work at home.
