People telling you to snap out of depression, irritating?

Great discussion. Currently deeply depressed. But some days are better than others. I have lived with depression for so long, it's not going away anytime soon. Tried taking a few different prescriptions, but none have successfully treated it. Felt no different with it than without.

When I speak of sunlight, exercise, what I am trying to say (I should have been more specific by the way) is that when one is depressed, being told to go take a walk in the park for example really wouldn't have much of an effect. Perhaps it shows the depressed individual that the person who told them to take a walk in the park thinks that their condition is just silly, etc. This can be irritating as many people have confirmed.
I can't say that I disagree with you that perhaps inpatient psychiatric care was not the best option for the treatment of your depression. But I am assuming that you were in inpatient care because they deemed you a risk to yourself? If so, then you must remember that the psychiatric professionals don't know what you are thinking, and while you may think 'oh, this is not helping me and is pointless', they may think that you could try to harm yourself at any moment and just feel safer if you were around.
Perhaps Intense exercise and sunlight would have been of a benefit to you at that point in time, I don't know. There is an alternative treatment to SSRIs, CBT, etc. known as BLT or Bright Light Therapy (I think the name is ridiculous by the way) which is a light placed over your bed and shines your face early in the morning (not bright enough to wake you up though) that is thought to naturally increase the synthesis of serotonin in your brain resulting in a better mood. There are people who claim it works. Perhaps those people saw benefit because the BLT treatment is structured much the way your grandmother's regimen was structured? I don't know.
Nevertheless, I am trying to look at both sides here as you can see.
And thank you for your comment!
And what if you have extreme light sensativity....if there is brightish light anywhere near my face before I wake up I end up waking up with a headache, and I don't like being outside a lot if its sunny and hot it drains all of my energy, if its cloudy and not too cold then I like to be outside more and go for more walks.
I hate the people who tell me I would not be so depressed if I went to church or believed in something. These same people blame all my problems on lack of my faith I have heard them blame a waitresses little daughter's cancer on her mother who goes out and parties on Saturday nights. I guess they believe her sin caused the cancer in her daughter. So I am sure they would believe the sins of my parents caused my autism. One of them got to vocal about it all the employees demanded she should be fired so our boss canned her. God's will I guess.

Horrible thing to blame a child's cancer on a parent. That's just ignorance! And to push for the firing of an employee is even worse! How could someone live knowing that the mom is probably struggling to make ends meet with a sick child? Disgusting! Cancer occurs in animals as well as people. No one blames an animals' parents for the offspring contracting a disease. I've had a few male cousins die from brain cancer. No one to my knowledge ever blamed their parents' behavior for getting the disease. Although I will say that cancer is something that occurs in my mom's family. She lost quite a bit of her family from it. It's as though it's genetic. But I'm not a scientist & cannot say whether genes had a part in the death of my cousins or not. Cancer has been studied for years, but there's no real conclusion yet as to why it exists. It's a gene or cell mutation. That's all we know.
I go to church. I believe in God. But I would never force anyone else to go. It's supposed to help with depression. It hasn't helped me with mine yet. But I would still be considered a seeker, not a bonafide Christian. I still have trouble trusting God, since I have been through a lot in my life. I cannot see the big picture. Things that have happened to me over the years has fueled a great deal of anger in me & disbelief both in God (in the past) & in people. At the church I attend, the messages seem like they were custom written just for me. It's not like the old services where the music was written a hundred years ago & the pastor just reads passages from the Bible. The messages are contemporary & have meaning even in today's screwed up world. I could never be Catholic though. Too ritualistic & cult-like for my tastes. Plus, no one has to get dressed up to go. It's a jeans & T-shirt place, which suits me just fine.

It's funny Tomboy because you are one of those people that I truly respect. There are so many great people out there who actually do believe in God and happen to completely accept evolution, homosexuality, etc. and it's troubling to know that at the same time there are so many people who use religion as an excuse to be ignorant of science or people's sexual orientations, or race... the list goes on.
Even though I'm an atheist, I feel truly bad that many great people that follow a religious denomination have to have their image smeared by the extremist nutcases like Michele Bachmann for example...

Thank you. I think science & religion can go hand in hand. Niether is mutually exclusive of the other. There are religious nut cases right alongside the rest of society. Look how many cults still exist, & they find people willing to follow. There's no right or wrong when it comes to religious freedom. What right for me is my choice, I have no desire to force my POVs or my religious choices on others. I may not like someone else's personal choices, but they might not like mine either. It's all about respect. I just want to be respected too.

And how will this help society? Torture & murder are barbaric. Maybe there's another way...how about education?

I find their level of ignorance humorous. When I am deeply depressed I have no emotions at all, not sadness, not happiness , nor anger - just emptiness.
I'm not depressed for long, never more than 3 days in a row though lately I was on and off for five days.
I just wish people who thought of people having depression as being weak would experience it themselves. It is a chemical imbalance that can take anyone. There just needs to be a situation to trigger it, in the healthiest and strongest of brains, and that person will fall into deep dark clinical depression.

Yea pensieve you sum it up pretty well. And I mean I'm not talking about silly depression that doesn't even qualify as depression, such as the kind 16 year olds get when they realize they can't date Justin Bieber or when their boyfriends leave them... like you said, I'm talking about the real stuff... the neurotransmitters being out of balance for no known reasons.
Said depression has to be the worst kind ever... especially when there's panic attacks involved. Like I mentioned several posts ago, I actually haven't had a panic attack for years now and am rarely depressed but that's because I found the right medication at the right dose. Medications don't work for everyone but so far they have made a change for the better in me at least.
And Todesking... I understand completely what you are saying. Human ignorance to these conditions is the ultimate kick in the face.
And how will this help society? Torture & murder are barbaric. Maybe there's another way...how about education?
People who think a certain way don't want to be educated. They want to presume and judge and make people who are already suffering even more miserable. Thats how they derive their self-esteem.
