The problem with me is that it makes me nervous so I go really slooooooooooow when riding and it takes me almost as long as walking.

If I can't find a route in which I feel safe to ride, I will "walk the bike" until I get past that segment of the trip. I invented a phrase that has allowed me to get as old as I am alive despite pursuing sport parachuting and hang gliding:

Safety isn't the most important thing. It's the only important thing.

It's quite important to me. I once read a blog by a guy that said he rides in front of semi-trucks on his bike.

I got a bike not that long ago, just to get me out of the city, since I don't drive and was frustrated at feeling trapped...regular buses are just too expensive.
I am enjoying getting out to forests and countryside, though I despise navigating busy roads to get there, and do struggle a bit when tired. I do tend to get distracted easily by the scenery so I have to be careful there.
But yes, I do like it.

The biggest danger, of course, is people driving motorized vehicles when you are sharing the road. To some extent, this is also true other people driving a car instead of a bicycle. I used to feel safer jumping out of airplanes than commuting to work, since I had to worry about people who often do not perceive a person on a bike. They only perceive other motorized vehicles. Anything you can do to make yourself noticeable while riding a bike greatly reduces the danger. Some people use florescent vests, others use flashing lights, and others use florescent colored flags. Some use a combination of these.

My favourite activity. I use my bike to get to places, near or far. It´s also a great way of relieving stress and anger, and basically any negative vibes I may carry. I actually consider my bike as a friend or companion rather than just transport.
