I had horrible insomnia when I was younger. I solved it through sleep training and now I have no trouble falling asleep. Even when I'm stressed or anxious. It's a long process but worth it to not need any drugs.

I keep myself up by talking to myself. I don't have insomnia, but I always feel that I need to get every little thought out into words and I literally talk about my thoughts to myself. I think to myself, "Why do I need to do this?!"

I sometimes go on rants as if I'm lecturing a class  (Of course, Wrong Planet is the only place I'm comfortable telling this to anyone).

While NT's can be talked to sleep, it keeps me up. I can never fall asleep as fast as anyone I know. It takes me an average 2 hours to fall asleep, so I don't have insomnia, but I just can't get to sleep like an NT would :P

Maintaining my ritual (including diet), pressure and tactile stimming almost always work for me.

Okay, here's what I do...it doesn't always work, but sometimes I have some luck with it.

I play that game "I'm going to the grocery store and I'm going to buy....."

A - Apples
B - Bananas
C - Cantaloupe

and so on....

If that get's boring I start from Z and go backwards. If I'm sick of "grocery shopping" in my mind, I'll go to the Auto Parts store, which is super boring for me, and I'll start "buying" auto parts in alphabetical order. Last night I went to the mall and went to different stores that started with A,B,C,D...etc. That was really boring because I hate shopping, and it helped me to fall asleep a few times (I wake up constantly too).

I have had insomnia for a very long time .... Difficulty getting to sleep, waking often, and waking early. I have good, calming, before bed routines but that doesn't seem to help.

What has helped is promethazine hydrochloride which I have now been taking for a couple of months . It's a first generation antihistamine which is available over the counter (at least in the UK) for a variety of purposes. I get mine on prescription, however - 50mg per night.

It has made a huge difference. I'm normally asleep now within 15 mins of getting into bed,and I rarely wake during the night except if I need to use the toilet ... and even then it only takes a couple of minutes for me to fall asleep afterwards.

To begin with I user to get a "hangover" in the morning which made it really difficult to get going, but that doesn't happen any more. It's not addictive at all.

Regards hearing your pulse through the pillow ... I assumed everyone heard that! I actually find the noise of it calming though, and sometimes even wear earplugs just to accentuate the effect ...

That's exactly the anti-histamine I'm on. It's brilliant! I'm on 25mg though but I find that's enough for me. I don't really wake during the night with it.

I also hear my pulse in my pillow. Drives me nuts!
