Is it just me, or is this sounding more and more like the X-Men?

Considering the difficulties in integrating with society start long before we are old enough to be hostile or unfriendly and theres no way to identify us in passing so its hard to stereotype like that I think that theory might have a hole.

Its more likely that the intolerance and blind irrational hatred and suffering forced upon us due to no doing of our own as children and continuing throughout our lives might possibly slightly have something to do with why a great many of us are rather bitter and jaded.

Can you fault the child you beat regularly for eventually turning and biting you?

No,you can't fault the child who's bullied for turning on you,but in that case it implies
that the original bullies may themselves only have been reacting to mistreatment in
their own lives. They react with irrational bullying of others who in turn develop an indiscriminate hatred of the general population. It's a vicious circle where each
generation can point to a previous one to explain their behaviour.
I find it best to try and treat everyone as individuals and not have pre-concieved ideas
about them.We never really know what suffering anyone else might have had in their lives. I just think there are too many variables to make it a 'them' and 'us' situation.

BTW,like a lot of us I was bullied myself as a child so I can relate to initially feeling
bitter about it.

It's not just you, and I hate to say it, but I'm in the "normalize" camp. We may be on the wrong planet, but this is the planet we're on. They are not going to adjust (much) to accommodate us. We must adjust to accommodate them. This doesn't mean giving up who we are, our unique culture. It's the same with any immigrants. You have to learn the local language and customs. When you get home at the end of the day you can fall back into your native language and customs. The locals will accept a certain amount of eccentricity, even find it endearing, but you have to have a basic grasp and understanding of and respect for their culture if you want to be accepted.

To be perfectly honest, I have a lot of admiration for people who are well skilled in ways that I am not.

Just out of curiosity, why do people who don't quite fit in need to adjust at all?

I mean, i'm not against getting on with other people, it's just that i spent most of my life "adjusting", trying to fit in, and all it did was leave me sick and scarred, physically and emotionally.

I accept that some things are more acceptable than others in the outside world and i'm not going to disagree and refuse to change or modify my behaviour out of spite (i like my nose the way it is  ) but shouldn't there be a MUTUAL adjustment?

Shouldn't both agree that there are things that can be done to make life easier and better for everyone, or am i just being naive and idealistic.

In a perfect world, yes.
I refer you again to the immigrant analogy.

I am actually quite upset by some of the things that have been said in this thread.
A number of people seem so consumed with bitterness that they can no longer see anything but nagatives about "NT's".
It is important to grasp the idea that in the same way we can't understand them, they can't understand us.
That doesn't mean I excuse the behaviour of those who bullied me as a child, but I understand why, and this allows me to forgive them, instead of allowing them to continue hurting me.
The majority of my friends are very understanding about the way my mind works, and often inquire about how it "feels" and how it "works". They are willing to sit and listen to me, so they can understand me to the best of their ability and make social situations comfortable for us all. It is for this reason, that I am appalled that people would talk about the death of all NT's like this...Even if it isn't in a serious way.

Not at all.

If you wish to remain in Chinatown and deal exclusively with other Chinese, then you don't.

I work a public service job with a team of civil servants. I deal with NTs all day. Knowing the language and customs helps me provide a better service experience to patrons, and it helps me further my career. Don't get me wrong, it's challenging. My energy's been low this week. When people ask me "How's it goin'?" I say, "All right" but I've been forgeting to reciprocate with "How's it goin' with you?" (It's a birdsong, call & response thing that NTs like. Makes them feel like you're one of them.) Intellectually I know to say things like this but it's not automatic for me. It's so nice to come home at the end of the day and hang out with my countrymen. Makes it all worthwhile. :)

ODD that you should say this. This has been one of my pet peeves! In the 60s, when someone asked "How's it going?", they meant "How's it going?"! It was a question, and they WAITED for the response! In the 70s it became something that my last "sociology teacher" called "CODE"! CODE was her word for something that was said merely to be said. She considered words and terms like "hello" and "how's it going?" to be merely sounds. They often mean nothing and you can't even really reply to such a question because the person might be down the block! Oh, and it IS automatic with ME. I am always SHOCKED when the respond. It IS happening more, but that may be because I do it more at work, and they know I may do it.

BTW we aren't immigrants! I, for one, am a canary! If I try to fit in, we may all die. Maybe they should heed the warnings. (Sensory issues indicate problems that could hurt their eyesight, hearing, or lead to DEATH! Emotional/relational problems indicate problems that could lead to civil WAR! BOTH are happening, so it isn't an empty threat.)

Steve

I agree with steve; it can be dangerous to force yourself to fit in; I can't do it, and believe me, I've tried, tried, tried.

NT genocide! What a deranged idea! Anyone suggesting such a thing should deal with their psychotic tendencies, before worrying about being an aspie.

I'm not even completely sure what an NT is:

I understand that we use NT to define those sections of the population who aren't Aspie.
But I'm not sure I've ever met a neurologically typical (NT) person. Humanity is made up of very many sub-groups, none of which could strictly speaking be described as NT. Many of these groups suffer prejudice just as we do. Many of these groups would be sympathetic to our plight.

True, there are people who are prejudiced against us. Such prejudice is born out of ignorance. No 'NT' can fully understand what it is to be an Aspie.

We shouldn't alienate (or kill) possible allies by seeing all NT's as the same. We should seek friends among to NT population. Educate those who are ignorant of the true nature of AS.

It may sometimes be necessary to wage war against those who would destroy us. But only a war of words, not a war of violence.

Yes, we should most definitely keep any thoughts of homicide (or Nticide) in that small dark room at the back of our heads. You know, the room where we keep those other disturbingly-insane thoughts, like 'if I flap my arms hard enough I might just be able to fly'. Or 'if I walk backwards on your way home, I can rewind the day and start again'.

Exactly! !

Most ppl with AS trying to fit in, is like forcing a square peg into a round hole. Can't be done. It is an exercise in futility.

You know, at the rate that genocide is continuously brought up on this forum as a solution to our problems, I'm starting to think that many of the dictators out there may well be/ have been aspies. :!:
