I just want to say that I agree with this.
I did however go to university to get a job. There's no other way I'd be able to get a job in the field of science without studying at a university. And I certainly don't like studying.
Anyway, for some reason, I thought everyone at college would be...smarter. I was disappointed. As you said, many of them go solely to get a job and many go because they're "supposed" to go. Few college students care about learning or acquiring knowledge. If anything, they are passionate about finding dates (or hooking up). The knowledge is secondary. Just look at the song "I Love College" by Asher Roth. In the song he talks about how much fun college is because of the sex and booze and how he couldn't tell you anything he learned in school. Sure, it's just a song, but I feel like that mentality is found in the majority of college students.
I also want to add something else that I've noticed. It seems as if many students just regurgitate whatever the textbook or professor says...That's fine and dandy, but these same students seem to think they're geniuses because they memorized whatever is in the book. I beg to differ. But I guess that's what people mean by "book smart." Even the drunkest of sorority girls can sit down, read a book, and take a quiz over it.
