When I began holding pencils and crayons, it was before kindergarten, and my mom says I holded them with my whole right hand, she tried to make me hold pencils in the correct form, but I got angry when she tried to change my pencil position and I stoped writting or drawing.

My mom didn't know what to do, I was 6 years and I didn't know how to hold correctly a pencil. Then she talked to my 1st grade elementary teacher. My teacher made me hold the pencil in a correct form, but for a strange reason I don't remember this episode of my life, I have a good memory and I can remember things that happened before this, maybe I got traumatized with this and that episode of my memory is blocked.

Yeah, I hold pen/pencil weird. I hold it the same was scrulie. (see the photo above!) I have been told that is wrong but when I try to hold it the "right way", I feel like I don't have control over the pen/pencil. Plus, I'm right handed with it comes to writing. I have noticed that since I've tried to learn calligarghy, that I have to hold the pen differently to get the ink to flow right and to make the stokes right.

It must be a asperger's thing since so many of us do it.

I hold it like the photo above, too! When I was in high school and college, and taking a lot of handwritten notes everyday, I didn't just have a callous on the left side of my middle finger (I'm a righty), but a full indentation covered in calloused skin. It was weird. I've always held a pen/pencil REALLY close to the tip, too, so much so that my teachers always commented on it.

When I was in elementary school and we had to write everything in pencil, I used to come home from school every day with the whole outside of my right hand from the first joint on my pinky almost down to my wrist covered in pencil, from rubbing on the paper while I wrote. I didn't hook my hand all the way around like a lefty, but enough so that my hand dragged across the line right above where I was writing. I don't do that so much anymore.

Yeh, I'm a right-hander but people say I hold pens/pencils as though my right hand is a left hand. All in all, I write weird.

Scrulie, can you take a picture from the top? From what I can see of your hand, that's just how I hold it too, except my index finger isn't backwards at the first joint like that (although I just tried doing that, and it can look similar to that, although not bent back quite as far). But I think otherwise I'm holding my pen just like that.

Mine does that. I thought it was normal. What is the angle of yours? Do you have any links for this?

Nope, not normal. I would say the angle is greater than 45 and less than 90. A neurologist told me it is a neurological soft sign. It is X-linked and also found in Fragile X syndrome.

The standard pencil grip is called the tripod (I had to research this). There is no bending back last joint of the index finger.

Here is the tripod grip:

So do most people's fingers not bend backwards at all? All of mine do apart from one on my left hand. I always thought everybody's did :?

Can you post some kind of picture? I'm having a hard time picturing what you mean.

And I like your "Plays Well with Otters" picture! :) EDIT: I just now got that that's a play on "Plays well with OTHERS" I just liked that it was an otter :D

I can twist it round so the front bit of it is upside down.
I click my tongue a lot so it does alsorts of weird things, but nothing really interesting.

Oh I know what you mean now. I can't do that though. And I've read about it being inherited as well.

I grasp a pencil/pen with all four fingers and thumb on my right hand. I was told once that it was extremely strange, but it works for me.
