I really don't remember how I did it, but y mom said I began reading newspapers.

First, when my mom was reading a newspaper and I was on her legs, I always pointed something colorful with my finger (frequently a logo or big colored numbers like discount announcements) and said "What do it says?". My mom always respond me, for example "It says, 'Coca-Cola' ", I made a lot of questions and sometimes my mom was tired of paying me attention.

I memorized a lot of logos and announcements like "50%". Time passed and then, if I saw a Wal-mart logo, Coca-Cola bottles with the number 30 and the sign "%", I told my mom "Wal-mart has 30% off on Coca-Cola". My mom was surprised.

Time passed, and when my mom didn't expected I began to read headlines without her help. I read things like "Fisherman found a dead man near to Panuco river".

I really don't remember when I first learned to read. Probably when I was four or five years old.

English: 6- my mom hired a private teacher.
Persian: 7- after 1 month of going to school.
Japanese: 13- again, a private teacher.

I could write and mirror-write some letters and numbers even before going to school but I wasn't aware of the meanings so they usually turned out like, "ABDCM9O1".

I remember why I was so slow to understand reading was because I would just focus on each individual leter and then string them all to gether. And because they never told me that there are "rules" on reading like what puting an E at the end of a word will change the vowel sound. That would have helped me a lot on both reading and spelling! Untll then I had to memorize each and every word on so I can spell them! I'm still not so good.

My mom says I was two or three (I forget which she said), but it's possible I was memorizing and reciting the books moreso than actually reading them. I was definitely able to read well before I started school, though.

I was able to "read" books when I was 2 by memorizing them word-for-word, but that's not really reading. I wonder if that might be the case for some others on here whose parents said they could read at 2? I really learned to read when I was five.
