...well, there is also "don't want to get it". Also, nobody is testing if a moderator is Autistic when they state so. A moderator could also be an autistic who does not fully understand the sometimes roundabout NT ways of thinking/speaking.

I would put don’t want to get it under hostile.

NTs have a problem of coming across as hostile when in fact they're just trying to understand?

Wow, that's a problem that I have. Someone's trying to explain something to me and I just can't understand. I always end up coming across as argumentative when all I'm trying to do is understand.

Well NT’s do that also especially in situations where something is explained a number of times but not understood. For Autistics who have had bullies mock and laugh at what we say it is understandable to assume that somebody trying to understand what we are trying to say is intentionally mocking us.

I find this thread amusing because for the most part Aspies and NT's sound pretty much alike to me.

Because they want to learn more about the spectrum.

I'm wondering this myself, as well as why its allowed. At the very least, NTs here to chastise the Aspie, as Omniel does to ASS P, should not be allowed.

I completely agree with the general consensus on this thread. The site is for everyone and as long as NTs are respectful to us on the spectrum, and vice versa, any NTs that register and post can do nothing but help to increase understanding and acceptance of Autism.

And, in a way I'm guilty of being on both sides of the situation: when I registered and made my first post I wasn't sure I was on the spectrum, and therefore identified more with NTs. But since then(even though it has only been a very short while), based the research I've done and my own past and day-to-day experience, I'm as certain as I can be that I have Aspergers. I even asked my therapist if she thought I had it, and she said she suspected it from the first time we met(over a year ago), and I am now persuing an official diagnosis.

^ Yeah, it's strange how identity changes over time as one learns. Not being snide, I've been through it too.

One of the NTs who is a member and author - Steve Silberman - has posted here and we can at least give him credit for has achieving more for AS people as an AS researcher than any of the AS members of Wrong Planet (AFAIK). "Neurotribes" is unmatched as a history of AS and the failure of NTs to comprehend AS people. His respect for AS people shines through every chapter.

He wrote a book. So that means he has done more than members on here?

He wrote a definitive book, and I would be interested to know who you think wrote a better book on the history of AS and the suffering of AS people. You?

If you are unaware of the book and its impact and want to know more:

Do you know for sure that noone on this forum has written a book? I'm just asking a logical question as there are numerous members.

I'm also curious why you think it is so special. Don't react with emotion. It's a fair question.

You have misunderstood me.

Of course some of our members write books - Hyperborean is one such, an accomplished professional fiction writer, and there are many writers of different kinds here. I am one of them.

You can read the link on my previous post for more info on Neurotribes. I hope you read the book. Here's a link to a comprehensive review of it too:

I can't answer your question about Hyperborean, without infringing his privacy. All members post anonymously unless they choose to identify themselves.

Hope you find Neurotribes the fascinating history that others did, and good on you for your interest.

Well, heck. I was fairly certain that I was neurotypical when I first came here. I suppose those who were diagnosed young or had the diagnosis suggested to them rather than discovering it for themselves can't relate to this problem, but I was really guilty about actively pursuing the possibility at first. I thought, "No, you don't suffer enough to be like them. Thinking that you do is downplaying their problems. It's selfish." Consequently, I avoided confronting it head-on. I wouldn't ask a doctor or share my concerns with anyone in person at first. Forums were the only medium in which I felt comfortable exploring the topic. Books were too impersonal. I couldn't look at these Marys and Toms who were analyzed and upheld as examples of autism and then apply their experiences to my own. Caricatures or diagnostic lists of a disorder will never be a substitute for human interaction. I had to know autistics to understand autism, in order to understand myself.

And I was excited when my (NT) younger sister told me that she'd been on forums reading up on neurological disorders. If someone was antagonistic towards her for her initial ignorance (and it is there), I would be furious with them. If we're going to be elitists here, we might as well swear off all contact with the rest of humanity because we have enough trouble educating the NT population without scaring them off on purpose.
