Only idiots will consider all aspies guilty by association. And again I say, anyone who comes here looking for a thrill after this recent murder will not care about any of you who are leading regular, boring (i.e. non murderous) lives.
You make my life sound so horrible
Well, there SURE are a lot of idiots in the world, many more idiots out there then people who have enough intelligence/knowledge about Aspergers to not make the association.
Its hard to take everything seriously, since its pretty normal to think about "beating someone up" or wishing you could
"kill them" from time to time. No matter how much you want to deny it, sometimes when someone does something you dislike, you think about how much better the world would be without them.
Anyway, the point I was trying to make is this - how do you seperate the real threats from the people who are just a little heated at the moment?
I'm not making life sound horrible! I'm being realistic.
I think we can tell when someone's having a heated moment and when someone is having a real crisis and their thought processes are not typical. We can always ask, or offer help, or suggest the posts stop if they are becoming more than just venting.
If you don't want to take these things seriously, don't complain about someone from this site smearing the reputation of this site or of aspies.
And I didn't imply that there are tons and tons of idiots out there, just that some people with make uninformed opinions about asperger's/aspies. Ignore them. And it should come as no surprise that some people are fascinated by crime. It doesn't mean they are bad people. There's another thread here where several people have said they are obsessed with serial murderers. It just stings a little when it's so close to home.

Yeah, that's what I think too. Some people might ask how we feel about it or something, but they're going to be looking for the proof that he was here most likely. As a plus, too, the post was "Do I have Asperger's? Does it matter?" I mean, that in itself says the guy didn't even know whether or not he had AS. Anyone who pays attention to that isn't going to think he was even diagnosed-ever... with ANYTHING. He vaguely eludes to a lot of different things, but never actually says "I've been diagnosed with...", he just mentions he has tendencies towards certain things like depression and OCD (which are claims that just anyone could make). (Unless I missed something) ...and he follows it up by claiming some acne meds caused him to be impotent. If that was that big of a deal to him to announce it like that in the slur of all of the other things he mentioned, who knows what the actual problem was. Maybe he was just that angry about that part and lost it or something.

I was kidding on the first remark about my life being horrible. It was simply a lighthearted remark pertaining to your comment about most of us being non murdering. I quite like not murdering people, It seems like a pretty peaceful existence and I don't have the dry cleaners complaining about "excessive blood" on my clothes.
Sometimes I cant tell the difference between a heated moment and someone in a real crisis. Its the Internet, I'm not psychic, sometimes text does not convey feeling very well. I'd like to think that I can feel someone over the Internet, but I'm almost certain there have been times its "slipped past me". Many people are not very expressive with their writing, and the less expressive it is the more I don't feel "in tune" with that person.
One does not necessarily follow the other. Thats like saying "If you aren't a heavily armed super soldier, don't complain when someone comes in and murders your family". Yes, I know that is taken to the extreme, and you might call it a straw man logic fallacy, however it does follow your line of thought and I believe illustrates it quite well. -
Also,
We cant be blamed for every action of our group, that would be completely unfair. I don't control what you do, you can't control what I do. We can try to help each other as much as possible but in the end, the decision is on the individual. However, many people will see us as a group that mimic each others action, its human nature to "stereotype" a group of people, or even "dehumanize" them. I don't want to get into a debate over these two issues either, I merely want to point out it does happen, and we should probably put up a public notice denying a link between the murders and us if we have not done so already
I didn't say you implied. I said that there are A LOT of people who will make the connection between Aspergers and murderers (I called them idiots, but theres probably a nicer word for them since thats actually a very unfair word to use. How about "uninformed"?). I very firmly believe that, and I think it would be a good idea NOT TO IGNORE IT , but instead try to raise public awareness that we're **gasp** people too.

Actually I missed the "my" before life! I thought you meant life in general.
And I do realize it's hard to tell when someone's really having a problem. And I don't think anyone here should be blamed for anyone else's actions. If warning flags are raised, we should try to take them seriously. I'm not sure what we can do, but any action would benefit our reputation, if that's what people are worried about.
But my point is that I don't think many people are going to make that connection. They won't come here interested in you or me at all.
Oh yeah, and, gasp, murderers are people, too.

They may not be interested in us explicitly, though my first post was in reference to feeling weird about having outsiders even seeing my post. A lot of people treat this place as a haven, even the public forums. I know, its public, but some of the thoughts that people post are only meant for a selective audience; not people just coming to gawk at them. I don't have a point on this, but it is just food for thought. But, I digress and so has this thread..
(here is my point, and what the initial observation seem to be evolving into)
Now it has become a question of : Will they walk away from this with the wrong impression of us? I believe they will. It would be prudent to separate us from the murders. We're in a publication (in a negative light I might add), and now is the time to try to salvage what little face we have. We're already mistrusted as being different, why make it worse by not condemning the murders?
Yes, murderers are people. I was not saying they weren't. However, I was saying the public likes to "dehumanize" people it thinks are different the collective society. This includes you, me, and murderers. Of course, you might not do that, but group-think is a very powerful thing. In closing...
I just think we should try to minimize the publics perception of the forum as a place where murderers post, and maximize the perception "we're just people with Asperger".

Somehow I think to a typical person if we put up banners or some sort of anything denying any sort of connection it would start looking fishy or something. People try to cover up things when they had something to do with it, they cover it up when they have nothing to do with it and are simply stating the truth. Which one would prevail? Well, since society seems to be fascinated with warped perceptions, they would most likely look at it like a conspiracy of some sort. It would push them harder to get more information out of us than we have to offer. If anything is mentioned, we should just point out that he came here asking what we thought-for all we know, he never went to see a doctor of any sort (except the dermatologist) about the mental issues. All of the claims he made of what he had were all done on a web log, not documented by any sort of professionals from what we know. He came here, and wrote 2 posts asking if he had AS. Who knows how many other places he went asking if he had what they had? He didn't even mention AS in his log, he just said depression, OCD, some social problems. So there is no logical reason for it to be tied to us in any way.
With worrying so much about it, I almost cringe to think of how many trolls we have had here that come just to stir stuff up, making what seems to be legitimate posts. It's hit or miss as to whether or not we'll see any backlash from this, but logically, there is no reason to. It will blow over soon, as soon as it's not being talked about any more. Just as everything else. When WF was mentioned, how many people responded, "who??"

Maybe it could be an opportunity to get that small amount of people (or large, its still to be seen) to really learn about Aspergers in general.
I believe if it was written eloquently enough that it could be quite informative. It don't view it as covering up what happened per say, but presenting ourselves as people with a meaningful message.

Because my impression was that WP was for people who are different.. if we lied and gave the impression we were "normal" people those who come by looking for help with the aspects of themselves that are not normal will believe we wont understand perhaps?
Besides I don't lie and if I condemned a guy for murder without knowing the details and his motivations I would be lying.
In any case I'm more in the mood today to condemn the people who pushed him to resorting to lethal violence rather than the victim (murderer).

Thats a good viewpoint, and one I thought about but didn't mention because society at large expects people to condemn murder in all its forms.
Maybe it could be worded not to condemn them, but to change everyones attention from the murders to understanding about the syndrome.
Either way, it seems we are portrayed in a bad light. It seems we're stuck on damage control. I think we just need to mitigate the damage. We're already seen as weird - now people who read that paper might think we're murderers. Maybe word it as saying though it was tragic, you cannot generalize all people with Asperger as murderers. We're all different people.
What do you think would be the best response? I'm just throwing out ideas and thoughts because it seems like quite an important subject.

This is the first forum that I actually joined, EVER. And already there has been people posting here who are murderers.
I always seem to attract bad people towards me...or maybe they attract me towards them. Either way I seem to have bad luck with doing that.
But that disgusts me that someone could actually kill a living thing, and a person at that!
Even with my previous fascination with serial killers this still disturbs me.

Or you can word it to point out the fact that autistic adults are treated so badly by society that depression and suicide are common but murder is surprisingly rare.
It takes shocking events and/or a perceived threat to their own interests to get the average Joe to give a damn about other people after all (beyond paying lip service of course).

I agree, and most people would agree that in almost all situations killing another human being is wrong. However, it seems we have to keep an open mind in this situation, though as odd as that may strike some people. We're an open group that welcomes everyone, and if we say "except murderers" then where does that slippery slope (ugh logical fallacy) lead to.. Thinking beyond contemporary morals leads us to the conundrum: What the hell do we say?!

I like that, I like that a lot.
Yes neither really are going to do well for the image of Aspies and the site... unfortunately.
We need some aspies heroes to offset the bad apples.
Wow, we end up with killers on the site and already people don't seem too bothered... it bothers me that people would do such horrible things to others.
Thats because screwed up people are more inclined to show up here, and this is a large site. It would happen anyway, whether or not they posted here.
That may be the case but still, it's not something that we should be so non-chalant about and push off like it's nothing... negative media does affect our image as Aspies. Just because one person posted here does a bad thing and all, doesn't mean we all are and the media doesn't give a darn about that.
Not it would be a bad thing tbh. Maybe people would respect us for once.
