well exactly. we were often misdx'ed over and over again because the AS criteria was not in common circulation at the time when many of us were ending up in institutions of one form or another.

I was thinking some more on this.

Seems to me that the factors behind BPD are a certain inate emotional make up (or, in a certain range), invalidation, and lack of skills for dealing with emotions. Now, many folks on the autistic spectrum just aren't going to have that kind of emotional make up. But if they do, well, invalidation (because we are different from normal) and lack of emotional skills (because they aren't taught in a way that fits our learning style) would be common, and so, you could have some on the spectrum with BPD.

AS++ topic

I reread the other thread via the link provided by Woodpeace. mny thanks, and also to -MR for his input.

Anbuend has that way of analyzing right to the core, very unique, and we have not heard from her in a while.

In my case...

Undiagnosed AS + Abuse at home and school often from the AS = Borderline Personality Disorder.

I have both. We know I have both. It's so hard because the emotions can be so intense and I don't even know what they are...and by the time I can figure it out it's changed anyway.

And I'm horribly guilty because I feel I caused everything bad even though I didn't (even though I'm told I am by my abuser)

I am pretty sure I have a mild case of it, but then again who really knows...

I belive aspergers is a extrem anxiety disorder, & ocd, blp , Obbsessions, & all the other weird & wonderful disorders & traits associated with "aspergers" are extreme ways of dealing with ANXIETY. I also belive co ordination differculties hearing problems ie, narrow ear canals ,which my son has ) & bad posture due to lax weak muscles from birth which may cause discomfort & pain in many babies & young children who are unable to express these feelings which manifests to strange behaviours in dealing with this, & later recognised as not the norm leading to a list of mental conditions all connected to ways of dealing with ANXIETY.

You are very wrong about Asperger Syndrome in general, but that is not to say that the things you say do not sometimes cause a very similar condition or two that could be mistaken for AS in some people. At first glance, they very probably do.

I do not find this matches my development/experience. I was not an anxious infant/toddler. On the contrary I was exceptionally passive and remember a feeling of contentment and a lack of any anxiety or fear.

I only began to develop anxiety about routines etc as I became old enough to need to react properly within situations and received criticism for not doing so. Indeed, I never felt anxiety about anything prior to negative feedback from outside myself. Who would not be anxious as increasingly, everything they do is wrong, or not good enough or cause for teasing and physical retaliation from peers?

Anxiety in my instance followed reactions to my symptoms. It absolutely did not proceed them chronologically.

I'm a stable introvert--no pathological anxiety at all.

I have known a few NTs with BPD...Socially they seem very outgoing...have many irons on the fire with many people because the need for attention is that strong.

My partner believes that if a person has BPD, then they are not "Neurotypical"

I think that his friend who has it is neurotypical in the sense that she is able to be very socially dynamic and manipulative. She acts on par with her age level and whatnot.

I don't know what a person with AS and BPD would look like. I have done some histronic things..but not consciously in order to get attention.

yea jacola, you're wrong on that one my friend.

Anyway speaking of theories, I think that Borderline personality disorder is just a subtler form of bipolar that's only explicitly manifested in the context of relationships. Anyone agree?

That theory appears reasonable at a 1st glance. Many people on and off the spectrum think that too. But the idea that anxiety is a basis traits of those with AS doesn't work if you see Asperger's as a form of autism and take into account all those with Asperger's who have no trace of anxiety.

Behaviours that are autistic is those with Asperger's are not triggered by anxiety. The lack of social reciprocity is essential to AS, as is the restrictive, stereotyped (stereotyped, but not compulsive) behaviours and activities.

Anxiety, compulsions and mood disorders are not a part of Asperger's, but often co-morbids.

BPD is, at the core, a problem of affect regulation - that is that there is a deficit of emotional regulation. Those with BPD react more strongly to lower levels of emotional stress and take longer to recover. (One of my female cousins was diagnosed with BPD a few years ago - she's also been evaluated for schizophrenia I think she is now considered bipolar.) It is somewhat different than typical Autism Spectrum Disorders that have a stronger developmental delay component - although those with ASDs often have difficulty regulating emotion as well.
