We have confirmed neurological differences. That's a pretty big physical difference.
There are several other biological differences as well, but this thread seems more focused on external differences. I would say differences of internal organs is a pretty big physical difference too though: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/hea ... 79688/1%5D Our lung structure looks different.

The correct term is hypermobility (or EDS) and it is prevalent among autistics. Just because you find it funny (IT f*****g HURTS if you have it bad enough) doesn't mean it isn't more common among us. Also, how do you think you got enough autistic genes to be autistic? Was it funny because you're adopted?

Has there ever been a research study on this? While USA Today is better than most papers, I've never heard of this one, and it does sound...unusual.

The neurological processing differences are difficult to ignore (Through some researchers do).

This is one case where I do not care if it comes from a reputed journal or not. They are doctors, they noted a difference, it was consistent in all children they "researched". All findings do not come from famous scientists. I haven't looked for an official paper, tell me if there is one. I would like more research like that.

I meant no disrespect to the esteemed MD. I was curious to see if there was a source document I could read. Curorsity got the cat and all of that.

I'm not all that great with finding research papers.

I found one where the title is "Study Links Autism to Bronchiole Formation" www.medscape.com/viewarticle/752342 but I don't know what it says as you have to register.
If you search "Dr. Barbara Stewart autism" in google you can see what comes up for yourself. That works for most articles where the researchers name/s are available. Good info for future searching, I hope :)

On the contrary, we have so many (physiological, morphological, neurological, genetic and yes, psychological) differences that we would be considered a subspecies if we were any other animal.
(And even then a requirement for being a subspecies and not a full species is being able to interbreed: RH negative women can't breed with RH positive men as the woman's body recognizes the fetuses blood cells as invaders and kills them if they ever get sensitized to them. Autistics - and schizophrenics which we are closely genetically linked to - are more likely to be RH negative or have family members who are)

I have never broken a bone, am very flexible (I had a doctor mention a connection between my flexibility, grey-tinted sclera as opposed to off-white, and reynaud's disease--kind of interesting), and have never fainted. I have a high forehead, crooked smile, and my ring finger is noticeably longer than my index even though I'm female. I have low muscle tone and am 5'5", 105 lbs.

My toes are normal (an "egyptian" foot), my earlobes are detached with no crease, and I have a normal pallate. I had my tonsils removed when I was 7 or so. I have asthma and IBS, but am otherwise quite healthy. I have very nice teeth, never needed braces. And my hair and nails grow very quickly, though my nails can't grow very long, most likely because I always have them in my mouth (saliva softens them), though I don't chew them. I have no idea how my hair whorls. It's just long, limp, and straight.

I don't believe there's any connection between AS and physical traits, but I guess it's possible.

According to research most autistics have crooked teeth and asymmetric faces. We also have bigger heads, bigger brains, bigger eyes, longer eyes, more upward slanting eyebrows, broader noses and broader mouths than NTs. We are statistically shorter. We are more likely to be androgynous, and our brains does not have the sexual dimorphism NTs have. We have twice the amount of neurons (and I don't know how many times more synapses) and it shows in our superfocus. We are more likely to be RH negative. We are more likely to have heterochromia. We are more likely to have red hair. We are more likely to be hypermobile. We are more likely to suffer from a whole array of autoimmune disorders. We are more likely to have epilepsy. We are more likely to be allergic, especially to milk. Our gut flora is often different than NTs and we are much more likely to have problems there. We have a different lung structure.
Next time someone does a thread like this it would be fun if we posted all the research that has already been done too.

I don't think it's funny in that way, I just mean some of the silly things people come up with just make you want to laugh. And no I wasn't adopted (in case you were being sarcastic or something).

Well I only seem to display neurological traits, not any of these physical traits invented on this one site. I don't have big eyes or a big head nor am I short or any of the other things listed here. Maybe people with more severe cases of Autism can look seemingly different in small ways but people like me don't. I know a few people with mild AS and you wouldn't know they had anything wrong by their physical appearance.

What is a "double ankle"?

Never heard of it before.

I could link to all the research papers but it's not worth the effort. If you don't have any of the traits, then you either don't have that much autistic genes or it's just natural variance. We don't have all of them all of us, but we are statistically much more likely to.

Shizuoka, are you saying that not only that aspies have superhuman brains but they also have super human bodies? If we weren't so impaired socially and in a few other ways, depending on the individual, it would seem natural that we would just take over the world.

I have a degree of double jointedness/hypermobility. I bring my arms, while locked together, all the way around my body without hurting myself or feeling any pain.

I can turn my feet backwards. I saw someone do it on TV and trained myself to do it. My podiatrist and husband scold me when I do it because it tears my ligaments and makes me more prone to injuries/sprains.

http://www.molecularautism.com/content/2/1/15 Here's a study about facial differences for anyone that's interested. They noticed subgroups of facial characteristic (what they called lower functioning and higher functioning), but all groups diverged from the "typically developing" group. The study was on children with ASD.
