You're at a disadvantage because usually family members have a kid's whole lifetime to understand how he operates and you have been tossed into it. I'm guessing you don't have much experience with little kids either and just the average little kid can be hard to figure out.
One of the problems is he is out of his normal routine. Autistics need sameness. Fixed schedules and routines. And even if he is happy with the tractors he's also in an environment and house he's not used to and with people that are new to him. That alone can cause erratic behavior, mood swings and meltdowns etc.
Here's an image I drew of how my autistic brain works:

I was an only spoiled child LOL so never little kids around he was great at the farm but now we are home he lets me play with his new toy tractors I did get in trouble for not putting them up and he was with me every second at the farm if he was not with grandpa he even walked me around the tractors to show them to me but we are home now and he just back to being in his world I walked by his room and he came pushed me past it and then went back in the den I guess it bugs me he was so different at the farm like a different kid I mean not talking or anything but he even grabbed my hand when he walked me around the tractors not he is back to like don't get close to me
