I still think that any "extra" traffic we get will be from people interested in a murderer and not at all interested in us. Get over yourselves!

Why should WP be worried because a murderer tread here. That guy went to kindergarten, too. Should kindergartens worry? He probably frequented a Starbucks or something as well. Should coffeee drinkers be worried? He shopped for groceries. Was it the lettuce? I could go on.

Who's going to think that WP and it's posters are all on the verge of murder because a human being with a major problem visited this site and posted a few times? Or that everyone or even anyone here thinks murder is okay? That's ridiculous. Are all Americans murderers because an American commits murder?

Jeez, this guy was a human being first and foremost. He did an aweful aweful thing! That cannot be stressed enough. But he was very, very sick, and obviously reaching out for help. Probably not in the places that could have actually helped him, but he wasn't thinking correctly. That much is clear. This tragedy is affecting friends and family of the epople directly involved. Feel for them instead of engaging in paranoia.

Yes, they will, because they will ask themselves "What caused it? Must be the Asperger". As ludicrous as that sounds, its true for many people. Why? They want to see a difference in the person, an explanation. Everyone is ALWAYS looking for an explanation to something, and the mention that he "might" be autistic leads people to label that as the explanation.

Yes, but those things were not mention in the article. WP was. People will assume WP must have had something to do with it, if the paper went through all the trouble to mention it. I know, its a logic fallacy, your right, but many people commit many logical errors daily.

No, but Americans are the majority, we're a minority. People judge a minority because its different then the majority. They already have preconceived notions about us, lets just add more. Again, its a logic fallacy, I admit it. But, again, many people fall into those pitfalls.

Yes, I feel for them, but what can I do? What we can do first and foremost is protect ourselves from the backlash. In fact, we can say our hearts go out to everyone involve in this tragedy.

Your argument seems to stem from the assumption that people do not stereotype other individuals. I'm sorry, that is not the case and its been proven time and time again. How many people have stereotyped someone here because of something (maybe not Asperger, but maybe something else)? It happens all the time, and you can not deny it.

Why just sit here and not do anything when we can? What is the cost versus the benefit? Would writing a nice introduction to our website, or a post on the Home page really be too much trouble?

Well I hate to burst your bubbles but if people come here after reading about the murder, it isn't going to be to look at us, really. They'll be ambulance chasers, looking for the murderer's posts, the atmosphere, trying to see more blood, so to speak. Trying to get into the mind of a killer. The rest of us will just be in the way.

They won't find much, just two posts and nothing that suggests any kind of instability.
Right now Aspergers is being seen in a negative light because of the UVA killings and the recent news about
Lisa Nowak. In both cases there was no official diagnosis of Asperger's. The only problem I might see for us
is that we might get a rash of trolling, but that always happens anyways.

They jumped on the opportunity to link Fortuyn's killer (van der Graaf) with AS.

I beg to differ. His log that was quoted only admitted depression, OCD, and social shyness. He NEVER said Asperger's-they added in that he had posted questioning it, but nothing was ever confirmed, as far as what it states. So how would that be concluded-depression alone could have caused a number of things if it was bad enough. If they want to check, they will find a whole 2 postings that he put up, with absolutely no response from him with either. There was never a follow up of "wow, I think I have this", or anything remotely similar. So where would this assumption come from connecting him to it?

Morons.

In other words, your average person.

I read his post when I first came to this board and for some reason it stuck in my mind. It is unfortunate that he killed someone.
