Salt with chips is a must, and I like salty foods. Sometimes a bit too much. But I've never had any bad side effects from adding it in moderation. Salt is good. Perhaps it is an aspie thing.

i've always been a saltaholic (though i'm trying to cut back since i have high blood pressure). when i was a kid, i would pour salt on my palm and lick it off. i love salt rocks!! though i haven't had any in aaaaggggeeeessss... we use to have a bag of it when i was a kid, but we weren't allowed to eat it. i still got into it, though. i remember 2 times when i did something kinda gross for the sake of salt rocks. the first time, i found some big salt rocks on the ground by the road... and picked them up and ate them. the 2nd time, i washed the powder off of some bath salts and ate those.. :silent:

the only salt i don't like is the salt they put on those big pretzel bread thingies.. that salt is like.. i donno.. but it's opaque white and to me it tastes like laundry soap. :eew:

MAN, I forgot about that! I used to do the SAME thing! I ALSO put a couple packets of sugar into water when I went to restaurants, and had a few glasses of it.

Oh geez. I did it again. I meant of course that salt helps correct our tragic defects.

OK, so I did a little research. I promise not to make a habit of it.

I found a study showing that salt has a calming effect on the hypothalamus.

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_o ... 4H3938T-3&

In this study, scientists found that mice on a high salt diet freaked out less when given an electric shock to their feet. (The best minds of our generation, hard at work.)

The hypothalymus apparently has a lot to do with autism,
"Autism is a complex, heterogeneous, behaviorally-defined disorder characterized by disruptions of the nervous system and of other systems such as the pituitary-hypothalamic axis."

http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2350/8/74

I read elsewhere the hypothalamus is also linked to anxiety and ADHD.

So, um ... don't bogart them pretzels ... pass em this way ...

MMMM salt...

My parents always complained about how much salt I ran through.

I love salt too. And also have low pressure--not as low as it used to be (the bottom number could drop as low as 45 which was supposed to be a problem, but it never affected me). Cliff bars make a bar called mojo--very salty....

I LIKE Mojo bars, especially the ones with dried cherries in them.

I don't think I crave salt especially. But I had low blood pressure when I was in my twenties. I used to add extra salt to try to get it up a little so I wouldn't get dizzy when I stood up suddenly. I used to eat salt from my hand, when I was a teen, but I'm not sure that that is a specifically Asperger's thing, or if it's a kid thing. This is an interesting topic, though.

My blood pressure is normal now, not low.
