This afternoon I tried to connect to WP from my office and found that they have blocked the website. It's not like they suddenly did this, I've been going to WP from my work computer ever since I found this place last year and have logged way too much time on here at work. I guess IT finally caught on. The head of our corporate IT department also sits on the company's Board of Directors, so... well I don't know what to think. Honestly he could have AS himself, but still. Wow, I don't know if this is good or bad, especially since I've been talked to about internet usage many times before, including one time pretty recently.

Companies have a duty to protect their computer systems from online threats. I'm not saying WP is a threat, but they might not know that. It might just be that the domain has been blocked on the firewall, or an update has included it to be blocked. As for the guy in IT having AS, a lot of aspies are indeed computer savvy & have a great interest in ICT. I do, I love anything in that area, specialy forensic/investigative computing, thats my main interest.

Also your internet usage could be destracting you from your job, your not being paid to surf the web I take it lol. The company must safeguard themselves financialy and your browsing could be clocking up bills. If you are approached, be honest if they ask what sites/connections you've made. This will go for you as much as you might think it won't.

Hope this helped.

So? Get them to unblock it. It would help if you could invent a business purpose for your access to the site...

Eeek I'd be terrified if I were you. I am the type who must always follow the rules and do nothing wrong. If my IT asked me to stop getting on the 'net, I'd sadly comply and feel terrible that I had been doing something wrong. They haven't seemed to mind yet so far. I only got emailed about my streaming a radio station (which I immediately quit). If the site was suddenly blocked, I'd probably panic.

I've had sites blocked from me at work, and I got them unblocked. I'm not a robot who will work harder if prevented from playing online. I tend to work harder if I can take frequent brakes.

I actually used to do this... comply when they told me to stop. But unfortunately I have an internet addiction that goes back over 10 years now. It's just that now it is getting close to costing me my job, and yes I am definitely going to mention that to my psychologist next week when I see her again. While we're working on treating my tics, my ADHD, and my other AS symptoms, we might as well work on that internet addiction that could cost me everything I own. Oh and also, when a site I frequent gets blocked, I do freak out. I immediately begin to feel a panic attack coming on. My heart starts racing, my head gets extremely loud, I start sweating, it's not good.

AspE, I am very much like you. If I can take pretty frequent breaks - particularly internet breaks - I am a happier and overall more productive employee. The way I see it, if I am getting all my work done each day then what the hell does it matter how much time I spend online? All the see is the dollars for the time I am on, but what they are clearly not noticing is that all my work is getting done, regardless!

Honestly, I kind of live in fear of this myself. :) Our IT department sent out a blanket email telling everyone to stop streaming radio and video and updating their blogs from work due to slow-downs in the system. I'm not doing any of those things, but I do check my email and look at this site. They are threatening to do random checks of what everyone's looking at on-line. Hopefully, they won't worry too much about what I'm up to since I always get my work done.

Regards,

Patricia

I can't use the internet at work. I have no access to it and besides you need a code to log on. I just don't have that kind of job.

An NT would have thought up the white lie to cover themselves already. eg You are trying to understand and help a relative/friend.

Is this an empathy example too? Are you considering what the other person thinks/knows or just what you know?

I work as an administrator who's job is to monitor internet usage, never take a block personally it is our job to protect a systems from malware, spyware and viruses. Also remember bandwidth is a finite resource and if everyone was allowed to do what they wished you would soon be out of a job. Most administrators have better things to do with their time than spy on you directly you have to catch our attention by doing something that puts your company at risk, or spending way too much time abusing what ever privileges your company has allowed you.
So cut out the porn and download sites and you have nothing to worry about.

how have they blocked it [is it blocked in windows itself or have they done it in the router/firewall?].
one that may or may not work-getting a free domain name [like .tk] and attaching it to WP,so it sees that address and not WP.

The NAS support staff said they're blocked from using any chat type sites at the HQ and day centres,so would think have probably been blocked under the same rules as them- 'chat type' which forum would come under.
But then, they could be doing it another way-by listing words rather than domain names, such as 'forum' or 'chat'.

Ya know, many jobs really don't require that much actual "work". I'm paid to sit at work and deal with sh*t if something goes haywire, which it almost never does.

I "work" full time but I do AT MOST 5-6 hours of actual work a week. I'm leaving my job in 2 weeks so other people are learning to do the few tasks I do actually perform, so it's currently far less than that.

I registered for WP on the clock

If only it were that simple. I have extremely bad ADHD, so it really is not that simple. I struggle with this every day. I used to be a very good employee back when I could focus better.

I heard at my job, the place had to block sites such as youtube because some employees who do use the computer for their work were getting on websites they weren't supposed to so the workplace finally blocked sites.

I have ADHD too, and it is extremely frustrating to me -- especially when my colleague who has ADHD too is getting down to her work just fine! In fact, my ADHD is how I got to be diagnosed as an Aspie in the first place.

Our boss understands that all employees who have access to computers like to do personal and social things online too, and he considers it healthy and necessary. The only people who get blocked outright are newbies who might do stupid things, like download virus-infected stuff or a GB of MP3s. However, he gets really disappointed when one of us doesn't give his best attention to the work, because he doesn't take a big salary for himself, and it's a waste of money when people spend their paid time unproductively.

My suggestion: If your job is with a larger company that has an HR officer, go to him/her and explain that you have ADHD, and ask whether it would be possible to have your tasks given to you in a manner which would elicit hyperfocus. You may have to explain how hyperfocus works if he/she doesn't know. Then you could always ask if they could give you, say, an hour over lunchtime to visit WP (especially if you explain it as a support group for people like you). It is much easier working in an environment where nobody fears being outed, because everyone is out already.

And get to the person who prescribed your medication and get the prescription for your ADHD medication adjusted.
