After a lifetime of failed relationships, lost jobs, and just general confusion as to why I didn't fit in, I saw a BBC article about the families of autistic children often having traits. I have a full brother who is profoundly affected with autism, non-verbal and pretty much spends his days stimming. He's also deaf and physically handicapped: two club feet and dyspraxic. I looked into it, got evaluated and tah-dah, I have not just autistic traits, but AS. It explains so much, and now I recognize that my mother also had AS, which explains her distance, short temper, scatteredness, and non-existent social circle.

Do many other people here have SEVERELY autistic siblings?

HI DonkeyBuster, I do not have a severely autistic sibling, but I come from a rather eccentric family that did not fit the norm by any means. My view is that I am not the only one in my family with AS! There are others, but it is up to them as adults, to look into it and pursue it. I have a nephew with HFA. My mother says openly she "has many traits." She believes she is more mainstream and normal than she actually is. She would actually fit the criteria - but one could not get info on her childhood. As an adult she presents as OBVIOUSLY AS.

I do not have an autistic sibling but I do know people with severely autistic siblings often have some degree of autism (either traits, mild autism or AS). I have seen this, also, people with autie siblings who have AS characteristics.

My little sister is severely NT. She never stops talking! And she multi-tasks like crazy too. She instant messages 4 people at once while watching TV, listening to music, and pretending to study!

I have a brother that has to be on the spectrum somewhere. I'd guess HFA. My whole family has pleaded with him to go get evaluated, because he is struggling with life so much. He also feels that he is on the spectrum, but never shows up to the appointments to get assessed. I have a severely autistic son as well as another son who is high functioning.

My younger sister, my daughter, several cousins, at least two AS uncles... As I'm fond of saying, autism doesn't run in our family - it strolls, paying long, leisurely visits.

Not sure how to vote here, my little sister isn't considered LFA but she's still classic autism and requires a lot of care.

No, I'm the only autistic person in my family. I'm also the only autistic person in my family tree, at least I think so anyway.

Well, my brother can't/won't really do much of anything other than raid the kitchen and watch TV without supervision or help. He's pretty much off in his own world most of the time. He seems basically content, as long as there's food in the fridge.

For my purposes, if your sister really can't take care of her own daily needs, go ahead and vote yes.

My younger brother is profoundly LFA.

He has no language, no autonomy other than urinating on the sofa and all over his bed by himself, and spends most of the day stimming heavily.

He also has meltdowns where he will punch himself in the head, and usually try and dislocate my fingers if I restrain him.

I have a cousin who's moderately autistic. Its definitely not AS or HFA. It's either Rett's Syndrome (which his mother says he has) or even classic autism.

yea my brother is diagnosed adhd but def has some autistic traits but not near enough to be labelled it, i was more severe growing up as a child, now im moderate to high. I cant take care of myself, cant be left alone for more then a few hours, basically very poor self help skills even have to rely on somebody to get food inside of me or all ill eat is peanut butter on a spoon haha, and my cognitive skills are low as well, also if nobody redirects me all ill do is sit in my bed and rock under my weighted blanket.

My cousin has Acromegaly (Giantism) and is mentally handicapped, but I'm not sure if he is autistic. I think my aunt may be somewhere on the spectrum.

No Profound Autism/LFA in my family tree as far as I'm aware.

I'm the only one with Autism proper (Kanner's), so I suppose I'd be the lowest-functioning, but I'm high-functioning in regards to that label.

AS, SPD and ADHD are the others.
