This is one of the most hated things I cannot as stand when it comes to neurotypicals. It's taken when you claim that you are normal in such a way then someone else claims that you are weird or has identified a quirk about you yet when you admit to being weird then all of a sudden you here "oh there's nothing wrong with you." Why tel me that I am weird and then in admit that i am normal under a different context? I hate that with a passion.

When people tell me that I'm weird, I thank them for noticing.

It drives them nuts!

When you perceived as being arrogant and or just plain oblivious folks wanna bring you down a notch or two.

When you are perceived as having humility then folks wanna bring you up a notch or two.

If you're obsessed with the subject of say...doorknobs, and you monologue at length at parties about the subject of doorknobs and the fascinating endless variety and history of doorknobs folks will wanna kick your ass.

But if you shed a tear and solemnly confess that "I just cant help myself, and just cant stop talking about doorknobs" then folks will wanna comfort you, and they might even say things like "I am obsessed with baseball cards/Barbie dolls myself...there there."

Folks will sometimes cut you some slack if you are aware that the behavior is weird, even if you don't stop the weird behavior.

I've done this from time to time and honestly I have a guilty pleasure from it but you know it's coming at that point. This however the range at which it varies when it comes to acknowledging it and then it's a sudden 180 degree turn.

I'll also add that I've had a situation one reasoned with me on a subject and found it to be within their wheelhouse too. Not sure if they we're just consoling but yeah I see how that may be just then trying to kind of say " high five dude I'm into that too" that to me is like we're on the same level or like he or she get's it.

Indeed. I have taken to using Winnie-the-Pooh disarming conversational words and phrases like "Oh, bother!"

My favorite Pooh phrase is "Why, thank you!" in the face of any insults.

Not to pick a fight with you, but what would you have people do?

Its a given that folks will react to a behavior that is odd by telling you that your weird.

But if you cop to being weird then...what choices do folks have in responding to you?

Hmmmm…

I suppose folks could say something like "thanks for acknowledign that you're odd. We will keep your quirk in mind and try to accomidate you". Rather than either going negative and saying "you're damn right. You are a weirdo", or going positive in the way you don't want that they usually do and say "don't be silly. you're not weird".

I thank people for telling me that I'm weird. I take it as a compliment.

I have a new way of dealing with stuff when someone acts in a non-logical way, like saying you're weird and then when you claim it, saying your not, I just ignore the whole thing and regard it an insensible rubbish or some form of game playing, neither of which I am going to take any notice of at all.

PS When I do this I imagine my brain retuning a Syntax Error and refusing to process any of it!
