question about quotes

I thought to quote I would go to reply, delete the part of the other person's posts that I don't want quoted, and type my reply. I don't know what I'm doing wrong because other people do it, the quote is in white with their reply under it. When I try it doesn't have the white box, why?

Maybe you deleted the [quote="Uhura"] [ /quote] as well? The quoted stuff need to be within those bits to appear in white.
