I know I have Aspergers (and maybe mild bi-polar and ADD as well). This has been tested, proven, recorded, etc. I was at a residential placement school for 2.5 years for it, etc.

Yet lately I have been very different. Maybe I am not a normal Aspie?

I don't mind conversation or have trouble in it
I don't have the need for anything sensory anymore (not for awhile)
I don't see the world through a filter so strange I can't cope with others around me
I don't go on about my obsession (guns) at all anymore, unless it is the topic at hand
I have felt fine not only going into a new guild's vent, but being active and even going down to Florida (from Maine) to meet another gamer (Obviously NT) from the guild and hang out with him and have a great time.
I don't seem to be overly shy around females, I can get along ok in most groups of people
Sudden change of routine or structure does not bother me hardly at all.
Large crowds don't both me anymore
My tolerance for loud noise has increased dramatically

Yet all these things were the opposite until about 4-5 months ago. I had trouble with everything, socially and otherwise, needed concrete structure, went on for hours about weapons, had a horrid time in any group I was in, etc. I had slightly more trouble with talking to girls then now, but not much. Guess I am lucky there.

I also used to be up until recently a Manic Depressive Apathetic person with major anger issues. I have almost non of this now (mild depression now and then).

I still have AS. Duh. It is not a disease or temporary thing. I still am abit quirky, think outside the box, and have some social trouble. Sometimes I get angry but it's hardly serious and I can cool down within minutes. But really all the things that seem to plague those with AS that are problematic to functioning have recently gone *poof*.

I really have no explanation for this. Recently I let allot of emotional baggage go and started to take life easier in the sense that I take things as the come now. All the sudden people around me seemed much more stressed/angry.

So what am I then? I am not an NT, I have High Functioning Aspergers. But I don't even act like most other people I know in real life, or seemingly on here who have AS.

Ideas?

I don't know, perhaps if you're bipolar you might have phases where that overrides your Aspie behaviours? Maybe you're just coping better.

There are certainly aspects of Aspie behaviour that I don't identify with at all, in particular having trouble with sarcasm or jokes, not sure I've ever grown out of anything though.

But I don't crave it really. I just can deal with it without any problem. I still like to be on my computer allot. Though at this point I am having some issues with my few remaining real life friends drifting away. I would love to have new friends (and a relationship as well maybe). Although I don't get out much. Maybe that will change once college starts.

Well, what's a normal Aspie? What's a normal human, for that matter?

People change throughout their lives and go through different phases too. Normal for any person methinks.

It's a spectrum. We're all different from each other, here at WP.

I get that but I am wondering why all of the sudden all (or most) of my "issues" seemed to vanish. Plus it would suck to be an Aspie thats this close to "normal". Then I have no group >.> I can't relate to Aspies and NT's will still label me (as a society).

Everyone matures over time. According to Wikipedia, about 20% of aspies "grow out" of it (this info is sourced). Not sure how one can grow out of neurological condition - but the brain changes a lot before maturity... and some people learn to cope pretty well.

Odd. I thought at 18 I was supposed to be a hormone driven idiot male that likes sports and is deemed immature even by his fellow peers who are the same.

If I am maturing like this at 18 I am sad. Kids want to be grown up. Adults want to be kids again. I am not really either right now I guess.

You have just gotten better, congradulations.

Gotten better all of a sudden? I have no idea.

Are you sure it didn't happen over night? Have you been working at this stuff and then you got better?

Sometimes it's environmental, we can have less aspie traits if we aren't in any situations that trigger more of our symptoms or we are in control of our own environment and not being all stressed out makes a big difference. As Tony Attwood says, to get rid of your child's AS, put him in his bedroom by himself and leave them there. It's not a joke.

An NT can say the same thing about themselves:

Am I an abnormal NT?

I don't like to talk to lot of people when I go out. I'd rather do my shopping and get things done
I don't like gossip and I am not into celebrity gossip
I am not into sports and I don't go to bars or enjoy it unless I am with my husband
I just love having my feet get massaged with lotion, it feels so good and it's relaxing
I find lot of sex gross and prefer vaginal
I don't really like crowds but I have to do it anyway or else things won't get done
I never did any bullying really in my childhood and I don't get a rise out of doing it so I don't do it
I am not judgemental and I accept everyone for themselves
I don't have problems with my aspie wife, I accept everything about her and I don't relate to other spouses with aspie partners and how much they struggle to understand them. I have no difficulty understanding mine
I don't like the TV being on loud and I don't like base
My ears ring when I have been around too much noise
I'm introverted

What am I then? I am not an aspie, I am NT but I don't seem to act like the other NTs.

Ah there you go. You don't go out much so your batteries are always recharged perhaps so you are able to be more normal but once you are out more, you are more aspie because you can't keep it up forever. But go out sometimes, you can keep it up. Just a speculation.

I'm borderline AS. I feel the same way and then all of a sudden I can relate to an aspie because we both think a like but we are both two different people. But then it can be the same with NTs, I run into some who also think normal is over rated and they accept me and also don't like talking on the phone or don't like bullies. My traits can go away and then all of a sudden I am very aspie. It's like I have a break down. It just depends on the situation and just as long as I am in control. I act more aspie around my husband because I am myself more and around other people I act different. There are things I don't do like asking the same questions or getting fixated and talking about the same things. My husband is the only person I will talk to about my obsessions and ask him the same things over and over and be fixated and I don't even have to worry about upsetting him and I can be more open. So I'm more normal around him in some ways but when we go out, I'm different and more aspie in some ways. I talk less and I do my own thing if I am not in control. I'm close to normal and I was still labeled and kids still knew I was different growing up. Now today, I am not sure. I think it's my innocent charm that keeps people from giving me bad labels unless they kept it to themselves. People seem to find me cute because I always make them laugh and no one gets mad at what I say. People just say I'm honest, direct, and I get to the point.

Seriously I feel I run back and forth between two worlds but I lean towards the aspie world just by the way my mind works and how I see things and traits I have. I'm not aspie enough but then I'm not NT enough. But that doesn't stop me from posting here even though I have wanted to leave this forum in the past for this reason but I was too addicted. I also go to two autism groups and I just aim for people who have things in common and I don't care about what they have. Every aspie is different and comparing yourself to another aspie is like an NT comparing themselves to another NT.

@Spokan_Girl - I read your post, and thanks for taking the time to write it. I had a feeling of dread when I saw it was you as the last poster (due to some stuff in another thread) and was worried you were out to get me :P

It may very well be the environmental thing. I recently moved into a new place for school and it's very calming.

I have been working on allot of this for along time but the change from AS manic to just Calm was pretty quick.

I have never gone out much. But what I mean is I don't go out with groups and meet people. I "go out" for shopping, errands, etc daily/bi-daily. I don't really have the chance to meet people as well, but with school maybe that will change

Again, thank you for your well thought out reply.

What did I do in the other thread? Was it stuff I said or what impression did I give you? I don't mean to come off all wrong to people.

Well us being calm helps because it makes us less aspie as my mom told me about myself. She said I don't have AS when things go my way. I have to be in control. It's like I go up and down the spectrum and sometimes I get really bad when stressed. I don't think I'm mild to moderate if I'm borderline. Back then I believed it but not anymore. Maybe back then it was true but not anymore. Now I'm borderline to mild but same thing pretty much.

"Aspie" does not go away and back on a scale I think. Maybe some symptoms/behaviors increase or decline, but the AS itself is still there.

As to the post, it was in the one that got locked. That one. Ya. Maybe I misread something you posted but I thought you were pointing an attack at me at one point.

04 Jan 2010, 8:54 pm

Yeah I agree. Maybe she was just saying that to make me feel better or she really does think that. A few people have told me she doesn't know what she is talking about. I've found out she says things to me to influence my thinking such as "Your Aspeger's isn't a big deal" and then she does make a big deal about it because does she have to tell everyone about it? If it's not a big deal then why do people need to know? One day I pointed that out to her and she said "I said that because I didn't want you to let it stop you from trying and let it limit you." Seriously when she does this, it makes me not want to listen to every word she says anymore because how do I know it's not another whatever you call it. It feels like lying when you are just saying things to people just to make them feel better than what you genuinely think. But then it's not good to shoot your aspie kids down by saying they can't do this or that because they have AS. Then they will start using it as an excuse because they don't even try then or they act more aspie and they just don't even try or even try new things.

Saying someone doesn't have AS just because they are in control or they are calm is like saying someone doesn't have depression just because they seem happy and aren't showing any signs they are depressed or saying someone isn't Bipolar just because they aren't showing any signs at the moment. So yes it is still there but we just aren't showing it at the moment. Is a dyslexic person not dyslexic when they aren't reading? See, same thing.

EDIT: Ah I see. I just looked at the other thread and I have a habit of calling out peoples irony. Doesn't mean I am attacking them. I just didn't like how you were generalizing aspies. If you said "some" or "most," then I would have been okay.
