...won't give up his vocal stimming - a repeated S, S, S sound which drives me utterly insane and wears my mother out too..

Any advice as to how we could get him to do another stim instead?

Record it and then play it to him for as long as he can stand it.

Or, if that doesn't work/makes it worse, dress him up as a snake so at least he'll look cute.

I don't really have any suggestions.

@Cockney, thanks anyway. The fact that you thought about it tells me you wanted to help.

@Lecks, lol!! I guess I could try playng it back to him, but he'd probably just look right through me and continue doing it.

It may be another problem that means he won't use a different stim. My friend Alin (Strapples) told me he knows some profound autistics and even they can break certain stims and use different ones.

My brother has severe learning disorder along with the autism, maybe he doesn't have the cognition to understand that we want him to change his stimming. ??

I would grab some tape and put it over his mouth. If he takes that off, I would tie his hands up too so he can't take the tape off his mouth. If that doesn't work, I would just keep him in his room where he can do his stims. Or try some ear plugs.

I wear ear plugs or listen to music most of the time, but I can't spend all the time with my hearing shut off, sometimes my mom needs me.

She can walk up to your room and get you or walk up to you and say your name.

MONKEY: Nope no joke. That's something I can see myself doing to my own sibling when I get pushed over the edge. That's why I wouldn't be a good parent to a profound LFA child. I wouldn't be able to handle the stress.

Have you consulted a professional about it?

That depends. What does the repeated "s" stim do for him? And what effect do certain pitches, rhythms, and speech sounds have upon your nervous system?

The OP of course, I fully condone sibling abuse.

Earplugs. If he keeps doing it it obviously helps him a lot, why would you try to take that away from him? Has he always done this, if not it might get replaced eventually.

Well a "hssss" sound isn't all that bad. He could be like the LFA guy who used to live next to my brother who used to scream intermitently every five minutes (I could sometimes hear his carer shout at him afterwards :?).

Maybe he makes that sound because he heard it somewhere and now likes to mimic it. /clueless

S G, don't have kids.

Little children, even normal ones, will make noise, repetitively, and sometimes in order to provoke their parents. If you're impatient enough to consider abuse as a reaction, I hope you won't have children yourself, because most kids make noises far more annoying than hissing.

And I suspect you're more likely than an NT to have a LFA child.

I agree. You could have a child with something even louder than LFA as well. My daughter has Rett Syndrome, and her only way to communicate is through crying, and sometimes, screaming. Sometimes this screaming will happen every 20 minutes all night long...
